| Tennessee governor ‘checks’ in with good news for communities |

Gov. Bill Haslam delivered good news Tuesday of more than $1.5 million in economic development and parks and recreation grants to benefit Weakley County and the communities of Sharon and Dresden, as well as South Fulton in Obion County.
The funds are from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and the Local Parks and Recreation Fund (LPRF) grant program.
“These funds allow communities to invest in their future,” Haslam said. “I am pleased the grants will go toward important projects, including emergency services in this area.”
Weakley County received $300,000 in a CDBG to help purchase a refurbished pumper-tanker truck for the Latham Volunteer Fire Department, replacing an older truck. The grant also goes toward acquisition of new gear for firefighters.
Additionally, the Como-Ore Springs Volunteer Fire Department will be able to acquire a refurbished pumper-tanker and new equipment.
The community of Sharon received $500,000 in a CDBG to go toward a new 100,000-gallon water storage tank to replace the city’s 94-year-old tank.
Dresden received a CDBG of $465,000 for repairs to its sewer system. During heavy rains, excess water goes into the system, which leads to increased costs to the city. These funds will allow for repair of 4,200 feet of line as well as replace three manhole covers and add two new pumps.
In Obion County, South Fulton received a $250,000 Local Park and Recreation Fund grant that will be used for what will be the city’s first park facility. The state funds will be used to develop a walking trail, a pond, playground picnic pavilion and stage. Published in The WCP 10.18.12 |
