Lady Rebels lead
Best of West field
Obion Central topped 14 teams in the girls’ portion of the Best Of The West cross country meet, held Tuesday at Troy.
The Lady Rebels clustered near the front again, as has been their form all season, with six runners to medal.
Rachel Jones was fourth, Nichole Whitson placed seventh, Brenna Wilkins finished 14th, Tia Parks placed 16th, Peyton Daniel was 18th and Katelyn Smith was 19th overall as Central won with 43 points, far ahead of runner-up South Gibson’s 119.
Jackson Christian School was third with 129 points.
Chelsea Ladd of Dyer County was the overall winner with a time of 19:07 to top the field of 134 runners.
Central’s boys were third out of 17 teams with 126 points, trailing winner Madison Academic (59) and Trinity Christian Academy with 87.
Coleman Dunn was seventh to pace OC’s runners, while Ben Maroney of TCA clocked a 16:35 to lead the field of 167 runners.
The postseaon begins next Tuesday with the regional meet at Troy.
The state meet will be Nov. 3 at the Steeplechase Course in Nashville
Halls ends season
for UC volleyball
Union City’s inaugural volleyball season ended in the opening match of the Region 7A Tournament on Tuesday.
The Lady Tornadoes dropped a 0-3 (25-11, 25-12, 25-8) decision to Halls in the tournament at Trenton.
“Our girls played hard and set up some great rallies, but we just didn’t handle the pressure from Halls,” UC head coach Angie Searcy said. “We have some great servers, but they didn’t perform as well as they normally do.”
Union City, which finished with a 2-13 record, did not have an ace but continued their season-long improvement in digs from the back line.
Alexis Coleman led the Lady Twisters with 16 digs, while Halle Kennedy had 15, Sadie Hollis had 14 and Raven Fair pitched in 12.
Fair and D’Leshae Olds each had a kill, while Kennedy had nine hitting attempts.
“I’ve said it many times, but I’m proud of each of these girls,” Searcy said. “Each one has worked extremely hard and made improvements in the way they play volleyball.”
Hollis, Fair, Kennedy and Coleman were named to the all-region team, while Coleman and Kennedy were all-tournament selections.
Hillcrest boosters
feeding breakfast
The Hillcrest Booster Club will hold a breakfast 7-10 a.m. Saturday at the Obion Community Center in Obion.
The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for children 8-and-under.
Little Twister league
sets sign-up date
Registration for the Little Twister Basketball League is scheduled for noon-2 p.m. Saturday at the Union City Middle School gymnasium.
The fee is $25 per player or $20 each for two or more players per family.
The league is open to all children in grades K-6.
