Rebels, SF playing on in regional
Moving on.
Both Obion Central and South Fulton advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Region 7A-AA Soccer Tournament Monday with easy first-round victories.
The Lady Rebels — seeded third in the West — had little trouble beating Gibson County (No. 6 in the East) 7-0.
SF, meanwhile, had an equally-easy time with Ripley, the No. 3 East seed Devilettes rolling to a 9-0 shutout of Ripley (6th in West).
The two Obion County entries will now advance to the Round of 8 today with road matches.
Central (10-5) plays at South Gibson, while South Fulton (8-8) visits Covington in matchups scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
Wins today would propel OC and SF to Thursday’s semifinal round at Dyersburg.
Other first round winners Monday were Crockett County (8-1 vs. McKenzie), and Haywood (a 2-1 upset victory over Trenton in overtime).
The following is a recap of Monday’s matches.
OC 7, GC 0
The Lady Rebels scored all their goals in the first half in cruising past GC.
Olivia Turner got Central on the board less than three minutes into the contest, with Katie Speed, Kelsey Gibson, Whittney Lee and Bailey Boucher all following with goals. Brooke Jennings found the net twice for the county locals
A strong defensive effort kept goalies Taylor Baker and Lauren Kendall from facing a serious threat in net.
SF 9, Ripley 0
Lexi Johnson recorded a hat trick and Samantha Murray and Sara Reams scored two times apiece in the Devilettes’ easy triumph.
Amber Leath also kicked one home for SF, which led comfortably 6-0 at halftime.
Taleeah Cross recorded 10 saves, while Maddie Kate Coffey had two in the combined shutout effort in goal. Published in The Messenger 10.16.12
