Many take notice of Carr’s big numbers

Posted: Wednesday, October 17, 2012 12:00 pm

Derek Carr, the senior quarterback at UT Martin, has picked up several accolades for his record-setting performance this past Saturday against Murray State.
Carr was named The Sports Network’s Offensive Player of the Week, the College Sporting News National All Star, Madness National FCS Offensive Player of the Week and Ohio Valley Offensive Player of the Week.
He played a vital role in helping UT Martin defeat Murray State, 66-59. The senior had a truly historic performance, completing 42-of-46 passes for 560 yards and seven touchdowns.
In addition to completing 91 percent of his passes, Carr set an FCS single-game record for passing efficiency (minimum of 45 attempts) with a mark of 243.78. He broke the previous record of 220.8 held by Stephen F. Austin’s Todd Hammel, who set the mark against Louisiana Monroe in 1989.
Carr also set the program career touchdown record with 54, while his seven touchdown passes and 560 yards through the air were also new UTM single-game milestones. The Skyhawks improved to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in OVC play.
He had touchdown passes of 22, 15, 22, 34, 17, 42 and 34 yards in the victory. The seven touchdown passes set the UT Martin school record, as did his 560 passing yards.
The 560 passing yards are the second-most in a single game in the FCS this season and the seven touchdowns are tied for second among all FCS players.
During the game, Carr moved into seventh place on the OVC career passing list (7,172), ninth place in career completions (559) and 10th in career total offense (7,205). Carr currently ranks sixth nationally in total passing yards (2,020), seventh in passing yards/game (288.57), 14th in total offense (284.29 yards/game), 16th in passing efficiency (146.22) and completions (22.57/game) and 20th in points responsible for (13.71/game).
The Madness identifies the highest impact players nationally and the top offensive and defensive player from each FCS conference.
The Skyhawks continue to receive votes in The Sports Network Poll. Eastern Washington sits atop this week’s poll. OVC member Tennessee State is undefeated (7-0) and ranked 17th, while Eastern Kentucky is 23rd. UT Martin, which is among others receiving votes, is ranked 29th in the nation.
