Bucs’ win in top-ranked showdown keeps Lions from moving up

Posted: Wednesday, October 17, 2012 12:00 pm

Dresden is in its familiar spot.
Boyd Buchanan made sure of that.
While the No. 2-ranked Lions were locked in a tough battle with Weakley County and District 13A rival Gleason, eventually winning 23-14, the Buccaneers were knocking off South Pittsburg, 35-21, in a showdown of top-ranked teams.
With its win over the top team in Class 1A, Boyd Buchanan (8-0) remained No. 1 in 2A with 17 first-place votes and 202 total points in the poll.
Dresden (9-0) picked up one vote for the top spot and 183 points to stay put at No. 2, 19 points ahead of third-ranked Grace Christian.
Grace (7-1), received two first-place votes, while defending state champion Friendship Christian (7-1), held firm at No. 4 with one first-place vote and 148 points.
Oneida remained ranked fifth, Adamsville stayed put at No. 6 and Hampton checked in again at No. 7.
Rounding out the 2A Top 10 poll, Cascade moved up a spot to eighth, Westwood aso moved up one spot to ninth and Houston County dropped two spots to No. 10.
Silverdale Baptist Academy also earned points in the poll.
The Lions knocked off Westwood and Adamsville before losing to Friendship Christian during last season’s run to the state title game.
Dresden will take this week off before closing the season Oct. 26 against Huntingdon, which checked in this week at No. 5 in the 1A poll.
The Mustangs are also off this week.
Boyd Buchanan, meanwhile, will close its season at home against Maplewood on Friday and against Copper Basin, ranked No. 9 in 1A, on Oct. 26.
South Pitt dropped two spots to No. 3 in the 1A rankings as a result of its loss to the Bucs, Gordonsville moving up to No. 1 and Moore County also climbing a spot to second.
Class 1A had the only full change at the No. 1 spot.
In 3A, CAK is now locked in a tie at the top spot with Alcoa, while Maryville is still atop the 6A poll, Beech remains No. 1 in Class 5A, Giles County is again No. 1 in 4A and Ensworth continues to hold the top rank in Division II.
Dresden is joined again this week by Covington (4A) and Jackson Northside (5A) as the highest ranked teams from rural West Tennessee.
Henry County is sixth in 5A, Lexington is sixth and Dyersburg is eighth in 4A, South Gibson is fifth while Milan is sixth in the 3A poll, and West Carroll (sixth) and Union City (10th) are again ranked in 1A.
University School of Jackson moved up a spot to sixth in the private school poll following its 16-13 win over defending state champion St. George’s. Published in The WCP 10.16.12
