Asked after the second of his three state basketball championships won at Union City High School from 1990-97 if winning ever got old, Tornado head coach Marty Sisco responded, “I love ice cream. The only thing I like more than ice cream is more ice cream.”
Turns out, the Hitman has a bit of a sweet tooth himself.
The game’s greatest gridiron guru not only shares similar legenday status with the UC hoop icon, but also the affection for success — and more of it.
The practically-perfect prep pigskin prognosticator is well on his way to an unprecedented 26th straight season of shattering the palate-pleasing .800 mark.
Friday football’s foolproof forecaster — after last week’s 19-3 (.863) menu and a three-week stretch of 65-7 (.900) — has all but assured another helping of his own special secret recipe results with a current 151-30 (.834) standing.
Having served up more than 6,114 winners during his time where “thin wasn’t necessarily in,” the all-knowing augur makes room for a few more bowls of the richest offerings on the market with this week’s main course.

OBION CENTRAL @ COVINGTON — The Rebels’ bleak postseason hopes are made more so by the fact that they’ll need at least one, if not two, more victories against the likes of Covington, Haywood and Dyersburg. Both the Chargers and D’burg are state-ranked with just one loss between them in 14 games, while Haywood — like the other two — is also superior athletically to OC in the skill positions despite its 2-5 record. Central has had an extra week to prepare and heal for the first of those challenges, meaning the Rebs will likely pull out all the stops with any gadget or trick plays in the bag — and that the team’s most explosive offensive playmaker, Bryce Warner, will be back in the lineup. And despite being a heavy underdog, you can bet there’s been at least a casual mention of a similar meeting when a two-win Obion Central club stunned a No. 1-ranked Covington entry that was unbeaten beforehand in the 2005 meeting. Because of that, however, and the fact that the two have played three straight competitive high-scoring games in their most recent meetings, the Chargers likely will be fully focused. The only motivational tactics Covington will likely need is that next week’s much-anticipated showdown against Milan for at least a share of the District 13AA championship will be rendered meaningless with a Charger loss here. That and the blazing speed of Johnston White, Carlos Williams and Company, could likely mean a longer trip home for the Rebels than the 90 minutes it’ll take to make the trek to Tipton County. — COVINGTON.
LAKE CO. @ SOUTH FULTON — The “woe-is-me” dialogue to come from each of these camps after decidedly-different losses last week has been widespread. The Falcons were devastated after losing a rain-soaked overtime decision to a Union City entry missing a handful of key two-way starters, while SF reportedly was largely uninterested effort-wise after enduring a two-hour delay in what ended up a 50-pound shellacking at the hands of Trenton. The Red Devils certainly have more at stake than LC in this one, needing a win here or in their regular season finale at UC next week to for-sure punch its postseason ticket with Lake County’s current four-win status making them a shoo-in. And while South Fulton could still slip in the back door without another victory in the state’s complicated watered-down playoff system, surely nobody in the Big Red camp would feel deserving with a 3-7 slate. Senior Night at SFHS will certainlly stir up some emotions for the Redmen, and the effort almost undoubtedly will reflect some pride that was seemingly missing last week. And while the Hitman was playfully chided by LC skipper David Barger afterward for picking the Falcons a week ago in their loss to Union City, the prep prophet is committed to providing that “jinx” to the Green and Gold again. Unfortunately for SF, dealing with the big-play capabilities of Devon Jones, Raheem Flowers and Zay Coleman will likely prove to be more than a Red Devil defense that has struggled vs. such athleticism can overcome. — LAKE CO.
