Remember when takes a look back at the local stories from the files of The Messenger that took place 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 years ago.
30 Years Ago
Oct. 16 — Running the inside veer to perfection against a Lake County defense that was guarding against the pass, Aaron Dearmitt rolled up 127 yards rushing to lead Union City to a 28-7 homecoming upset of the second-ranked and previously-unbeaten Falcons. Dearmitt had an 84-yard scoring scamper and also threw a 19-yard TD pass to Marcus Allen. Gary Carr and Lane Wright also found the endzone, while Kevin Payne recorded three quarterback sacks for the Tornadoes.
Oct. 16 — Bruce Grooms threw for 108 yards and a touchdown and South Fulton kept Westview winless with a 20-14 victory. Grooms’ scoring pass went to Phil Bivens and ended up being the deciding score for the Red Devils, who improved to 3-4.
20 Years Ago
Oct. 12 — Obion Central and Union City were both winners in prep football. The Rebels blanked Covington 22-0 as Brian Conner threw for 169 yards on 9-of-10 passing. Mike Terry, J.R. Boane, Scott Webb and Eric Island all also shined for OC, which squared its record at 3-3. UC got 167 yards rushing and three touchdowns from Chris Wiggins to improve to 6-0 and protect its No. 5 state ranking with a 35-20 triumph over Dyer County. Marcus Lewis accumulated 107 yards on the ground and threw and ran for TDs for the Twisters.
Oct. 16 — South Fulton High School golfers Mikki McLeary and Marianne Brann concluded a spectacular three-year run with a third-place finish in the state tournament. The Devilette tandem made it to the state level three consecutive years, finishing sixth, then fourth, before their best ever showing. Brann’s two-day total (92-94) was good for 12th in the individual competition, while McLeary (103-89) allowed her to finish in a tie for 16th in the individual field.

Oct. 16 — Obion Central quarterback Wes Moore continued to shatter school records and win statewide awards after throwing for 452 yards and five touchdowns in the Rebels’ 42-20 rout of Trenton that improved OC to 6-1. Moore completed 34-of-53 passes, with his attempts, completions and yardage totals all new school marks. He was honored as the Associated Press Class 3A Player of the Week for the second consecutive time and the third time of the season. Colby McBride had nine catches for 252 yards and four TDs, while Brian Kissell had nine grabs for 75 yards.
Oct. 16 — Mitchell Maynard was honored as the Messenger’s Defensive Player of the Week after recording an astonishing 21 solo tackles in South Fulton’s 28-7 loss to West Carroll. Maynard was Obion County’s top tackler after seven weeks with 83 stops in all.

Oct. 11 — Michael Hart, currently an assistant coach with the Union City High School boys’ basketball program, was set to be inducted into the UT Martin Hall of Fame. Hart, a bruising 6-7 forward, held the Skyhawk school record for most field goals made in a season and played professionally in Europe for 10 years after finishing his UTM career. Also set to be welcomed in the UT Martin elite fraternity was Dennis Suiter, the father of Obion Central girls’ coach Eddie Suiter and Westview assistant boys’ coach J.B. Suiter.
Oct. 14 — Union City continued a push to make the playoffs by whipping Obion County brethren South Fulton 47-12. Brett White tossed three touchdown passes in the first quarter and ran for a fourth score while teammate Pat Polk also had a hand in four Twister TDs — three rushing and one receiving. Hunter Harris threw two touchdown aerials to account for South Fulton’s point.

Oct. 14 — Cain Aaron’s quarterback sneak with 34 seconds left lifted Hillcrest to a 24-22 victory over Ridgemont in the 16th annual Rebel Bowl. Aaron, who was forced into the signal-caller’s role due to a broken wrist suffered by Jonathan Dobson, also threw two TD passes to Austin Harris as the Cougars scored all their points in the fourth quarter. Dobson, playing with a cast on his wrist, had a 78-yard kickoff for a touchdown. Alberto Vasquez (two touchdowns) and Emmanuel Morgan (one TD, two 2-point conversions) were named R’mont’s most outstanding players.
Oct. 17 — Third-ranked Obion Central suffered its first loss, a 50-36 shootout setback vs. No. 5 Covington before a standing-room-only crowd at Troy. The Chargers riddled the OC defense for 571 yards — 512 of that on the ground. Head coach Shawn Jackson was discharged from the hospital just two days earlier and came out of the press box to the sidelines in an attempt to help his troops, but to no avail. Trey Phipps threw for 357 yards and two TDs, while LaDevin Fair scored twice for Obion Central. Published in The Messenger 10.11.12 |
