Twisters do enough in OT win to hold No. 10 spot
With no room to fall, Union City simply stayed put.
The Golden Tornadoes remained ranked No. 10 in the latest Associated Press Class 1A Tennessee high school football poll, released Monday afternoon.
The vote of sports writers and broadcasters from across the state has Union City in the same spot it was a week ago. Once ranked as high as No. 2, the Twisters picked up 35 points in the poll.
Union City is now 5-3 on the season following a thrilling and rain-soaked 34-28 overtime win over Lake County at Tiptonville on Friday night.
The Tornadoes will be off this week and then close the regular season with a pair of District 14 games before moving on to the 1A playoffs.
UC will host South Fulton next week before closing the season Oct. 26 at Humboldt.
With three losses, Union City shares with Fairview (10th in 3A) the distinction of having the most losses of any ranked team in the six public school polls. Chattanooga Baylor (4-3) and Montgomery Bell Academy (5-3) are eighth and 10th, respectively, in Division II.
There was some movement in the 2A poll, dictated by a pair of losses.
Huntingdon dropped from fifth to seventh following a 21-13 setback to Milan, ranked sixth in the Class 3A poll.
Clarksville Academy, meanwhile, also fell two spots from seventh to ninth after suffering its second loss in three weeks, 28-20 to Houston County, the No. 8 team in 2A.
South Pittsburg still sits atop the 1A poll, receiving 206 points and 12 first-place votes, while Gordonsville is second. Moore County is ranked third, Greenback is fourth and Coalfield is fifth.
South Pitt will host Boyd Buchanan this weekend in a battle of top-rated teams, the Buccaneers atop the 2A poll.
Rounding out the 1A poll, Copper Basin is sixth, and West Carroll is up a spot to No. 8.
All of the No. 1 teams kept their spots — Maryville in 6A, Beech in 5A, Giles County in 4A, CAK in 3A and Ensworth in Division II.
Across rural West Tennessee, Dresden (2A), Covington (4A) and Jackson Northside (5A) are the highest-ranked team in the region, all coming in this week at No. 2 in their respective classifications.
Henry County is sixth and Hardin County is tied for 10th in the 5A poll, while Lexington (sixth) and Dyersburg (eighth) join Covington in the 4A rankings.
Obion County Central has a direct interest in the Class 4A poll as the Rebels will visit Covington this week and Dyersburg in Week 10.
In 3A, South Gibson is ranked just ahead of Milan at No. 5, while Adamsville is sixth in 2A.
University School of Jackson is No. 7 in the private school poll.
