Humboldt, weather wash away ’Jackets

The last time the Greenfield Yellowjackets were at home, they were able to utilize a balanced rushing and passing attack to snap a 15-game losing streak.
On Friday night, however, Humboldt — and a lengthy rain delay — proved to be too much for the young ’Jackets team as they fell 27-0.
Nine-and-a-half minutes into the game, thunder and lightning forced a one-hour, 50-minute delay. Once the thunder and lightning subsided, the teams were able to retake the field and complete the first half, but that was all the storm would allow.
As the teams retook the field after the half, the thunder and lightning resumed, and this time the coaches and officials elected to call the game.
The ’Jackets finished with only 29 yards of total offense and managed only three first downs. Austin Pence (four carries for four yards) and Jeremy Johnson (eight carries for two yards) led the Jackets rushing attack. Johnson completed four of his nine pass attempts for 33 yards, including a 22-yard pass to sophomore Miles Cavitt.
The Viking rushing attack dominated from the start. Junior Nick McLilly had 18 carries for 237 yards and scored three of Humboldt’s four touchdowns, accounting for all but 10 of the Vikings total yards of offense.
“They have some really good athletes,” said Greenfield first-year head coach Don Pitt. “When they get in the open field it’s hard to catch up with them.”
The Jacket defense caught a break on the Vikings first drive of the game. A wet ball got away from McLilly and was recovered by the Greenfield defense, giving the offense the ball on their own 37-yard-line.
A couple running plays, including a 10-yard run by junior quarterback Jeffrey Johnson, and a Viking personal foul put the Jackets on the Humboldt 35 yard line. But the wet conditions would strike again. Johnson stepped back and threw a ball down the sideline, but it went straight into the waiting arms of Humboldt’s Jaylon Montague.
McLilly wasted no time on the next possession, carrying on all five plays from scrimmage before reaching the end zone on a six-yard carry to give his team the lead.
After a three-and-out by the ’Jacket offense, McLilly added another 13-yard carry, but that’s when lightning struck and the teams and fans evacuated the stadium.
After the nearly two hour rain delay, the teams returned to the field and McLilly picked up right where he left off, and six plays later was in the end zone once again, this time on a five-yard carry.
The woes continued for the Yellowjackets on their next possession, forced to go three-and-out for the second time in the contest.
It only took McLilly one snap to reach the end zone this time. A couple of nice moves and a late burst of speed gave the junior his third touchdown of the game, this one for 75 yards.
The Yellowjacket defense came up with a fourth down stop on the Vikings next possession, giving the offense the ball at their 41-yard-line. The Jackets crossed midfield on a 22-yard pass from Johnson to Cavitt, but would be stopped three plays later.
On 4th-and-19, the snap sailed over punter Zach Grebe’s head and was picked up by Humboldt’s Garret Oden, who ran it back for the Vikings’ final touchdown.
The Vikings got the ball back in the final minutes of the half and with the time ticking away, Montague launched the ball toward the end zone, but it was Greenfield’s Zachary Lewis who came down with it as time expired in the half.
Lewis’ interception would also be the final play of the game after the return of lightning.
The Yellowjackets have a short week coming up, as they will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Halls.
“Normally (Monday) is a film and conditioning day but since it’s a short week we’re going to come out and do all that and add an extra hour at the end of practice,” said Pitt. “This team is wanting to fight and win some more football games and we are looking forward to going to Halls next week.” Published in The WCP 10.9.12
