Seniors lead Westview to league’s division title

Westview honored its six soccer seniors Monday night. In return, that Lady Charger group celebrated with an 11-0 win over Trenton to take the Eastern Division of District 13A-AA.
Westview secured home field advantage and a first-round bye in the district tournament with the win. The Lady Chargers will play next Tuesday. Head coach Matt Couples believes his squad will be playing Obion County Central.
“We are very happy with that, and it gives us a bye,” Couples said. “We get to rest a little bit on Monday and do some practice. Then we are going to come back and do our best. We are probably going to be playing Obion County, and they always play us tough.”
Westview travels to Crockett County to finish out the regular season tonight. The Lady Chargers are 12-3-1 on the season, 8-0 in the district and 5-0 in the Eastern Division.
Five Lady Chargers scored goals against the Lady Tide, and it was seniors who got the scoring onslaught started early in the game.
Senior Shelby Donavant scored 38 seconds into the contest. Kayla Guthrie followed Donavant with a pair of goals at the 27:29 and 26:33 marks in the first period. Donavant scored her second goal of the game with 21:22 left in the first period.
“It was solid for them to come out and play like that,” Couples said. “It is a little scary for next year. We are losing a lot, but I am not thinking about that right now.”
Guthrie led the Lady Chargers with five goals in the game. She scored two in the first period and three in the second. Donavant had two goals, Brittney Johnson scored twice, Alexus Taylor and Mary Schommer each scored to give Westview an evenly distributed scoring attack.
The Lady Chargers will need to keep up the scoring from multiple players and not rely on one or two in order to advance in the upcoming district tournament.
The Lady Tide only got two shots on goal. Makenzie Vincent got one save early in the first period, and Trenton’s other shot went wide to the right of the net.
Westview’s defense rarely allowed Trenton to cross midfield, and when they did, the Lady Chargers quickly took control of the ball and pushed it toward the Trenton goalkeeper.
“It has been a process all year to try to build up and keep possession,” Couples said.
“That is the key in soccer. Anytime you can do that in district play is good. We are playing really well. I am happy with their effort tonight.
THURSDAY’S MATCH

Guthrie scored with 10 minutes to play to give the Lady Chargers the win after D’burg had rallied from a halftime deficit.
Westview grabbed a 2-0 advantage at the intermission only to see the Lady Trojans to tie it.
Guthrie had two goals, while Emily Plunk scored the other. Vincent had 15 saves. Published in The WCP 10.9.12
