Dresden Middle School capped off an undefeated season Thursday night, the first since 1988, with a 30-14 win over Martin.
Coaches and players alike celebrated the first undefeated season, going 8-0, in 24 years with the ice water bath after the game. Even with the icy bath, head coach David Lewellen was all smiles after the game.
“It has been 24 years, 1988 the last time Dresden Middle School went undefeated and part of that is because we schedule tough teams,” Lewellen said. “We play quality teams with our middle school schedule, and that pays off for our high school. You have seen what our high school has done this year and last year. That is no accident.”
By no means is it an accident with the teams the Lions play. Many are also the same schedule as Dresden High School plays such as West Carroll, Huntingdon, Martin, Gleason and McKenzie.
Dresser Winn capped his final season at DMS win an 11-of-16 passing performance for 133 yards, including one passing touchdown to Cade Rogers in the second quarter. Winn also ran the ball 13 times for 60 yards and the Lions’ first score of the game from four yards out.
Another one of those kids is Quincey McDonald. He also finished up his middle school football career with 77 yards on nine carries and two rushing TDs from eight and three yards outs. He also had three receptions for 31 yards.
The first quarter went scoreless as both Martin and Dresden were feeling each other out trying to get the quick upper hand. The Lions finished up a drive that began in the first quarter at the four-yard-line and finished in the second with Winn’s four-yard run.
The Lions started marching down the field again after holding the Panthers on four downs and got it down to the 13.
A 17-yard loss on a bad snap almost ended the drive, but Winn hit Rogers for the 22-yard score.
McDonald scored his first TD of the game with 6:11 to play in the third on his eight-yard run. The Panthers finally got on the board four plays later on McKinney Baker’s 51-yard scoring pass to Cameron Jones with 3:59 to play in the quarter.
The Panthers made it a one possession game on the first play of the fourth quarter on Baxter’s four-yard run.
The Lions’ defense stepped up and held the Panthers on a fourth-and-eight at Martin’s 27 yard line. McDonald took the ball in from three yards out with 1.5 seconds left to add insult to injury and to get a little payback from last year’s 52-20 pounding from Martin.
Dresden finished with 303 total yards of offense. The Panthers gained 174 total yards.
