OVC extending stay
at Pringles Park

The Ohio Valley Conference announced on Friday a one-year extension to its deal to hold its annual baseball championship at Pringles Park in Jackson.
The 2013 OVC Baseball Championship will be held May 22-26 at the venue which serves as the home of the Jackson Generals, the AA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.
It marks the fourth-straight season the event will be played at Pringles Park.
“We appreciate the leadership and commitment the City of Jackson and the Jackson Generals have made to the OVC for making this an outstanding event for our student-athletes,” said OVC Commissioner Beth DeBauche.
“We are extremely happy to continue our relationship with the OVC in hosting its baseball championship,” said Jason Compton, general manager of the Jackson Generals.
Pringles Park opened in 1998 and has a seating capacity of 6,000.
The venue hosted the 1999 and 2011 Southern League All-Star Games.
Pringles Park also has luxury suites, a video board and merchandise shop that will be used for the championship.

UTM’s Barfield earns
‘special’ recoognition

Junior Kevin Barfield was named the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Specialist of the Week for his effort in UT Martin’s 51-37 football victory over Eastern Illinois.
Barfield, who returns kicks and plays wide receiver, set the tone in early in the game by taking the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.
The Memphis native put the Skyhawks ahead for good just 13 seconds into the game.
Barfield finished the game with 161 all-purpose yards — 118 on kickoff returns and 43 receiving yards on five receptions, including a 29-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

UT Martin netters
hold ‘pro-am’ event

The UT Martin tennis team spent Thursday night holding a “pro-am” event at the Skyhawk Varsity Courts, raising money for the Ronald McDonald House charity.
The current members of the Skyhawk tennis team teamed with various members of the community to play doubles.
The local participants were Charles Cutwright, Jackie Gullett, Darlene Adkins, Donald Adkins, Craig Darroch, Michael Martin, Bill McCall and Humberto Hernandez. McCall won the most games total for the three rounds played.
“The event was a big success,” Skyhawk head coach Dennis Taylor said. “The girls had a blast and it was all for a good cause.”
UT Martin resumes its fall slate this weekend, when it travels to the Memphis Fall Invitational.
