Good start not enough for ’Dogs

Posted: Wednesday, October 3, 2012 12:00 pm

Gleason held its own Friday night against Huntingdon in the first quarter, but it went all the Mustangs’ way the rest of night.
The Mustangs outscored the Bulldogs 22-0 in the second quarter in Huntingdon’s 43-14 District 13A win.
Huntingdon’s Jacob Warbritton scored all three of his touchdowns in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs jumped out on top in the first quarter on Kyle Williams 20-yard run before the Mustangs went on their scoring spree. The score was all knotted up at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Gleason, like the rest of the other opponents the Mustangs have gone up against this season, had trouble containing Warbritton most of the game. He carried the ball 22 times for 237 yards.
The Mustangs made it 29-7 by returning the second half opening kickoff for a touchdown. Williams scored his second touchdown for the Bulldogs later in the third quarter on a 10-yard run to cut Huntingdon’s lead to 29-14.
Huntingdon scored again in the third to take a 36-14 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Mustangs scored once in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring for the game.
Tanner Trevathan went 9-of-15 for 120 yards for the Bulldogs. He had one pass picked off that was returned for a touchdown. Glynn Hilliard scored a pair of touchdowns for Huntingdon.
The setback puts the Bulldogs at 3-3 on the season and 0-3 in the district. Huntingdon improves to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the district.
Gleason will be celebrating its homecoming this Friday when the Bulldogs play host to Fulton City.
The Bulldogs of Fulton City lost 66-0 to Mayfield, Kentucky’s No. 1-ranked  Class 1A team, this past Friday night.
Gleason’s homecoming will give the Bulldogs a chance to get back on the winning track against the weaker Fulton City team, which will be coming in with a 0-6 record.
Gleason will have an opportunity to get back in the district race next Friday when they host first-place Dresden.
Huntingdon will have its hands full at home on Friday with Milan. Published in The WCP 10.2.12
