Unbeaten Dresden parties in style

Posted: Wednesday, September 26, 2012 12:00 pm

Greenfield Middle School ran into a buzz saw Thursday night at Dresden as the Lions celebrated their homecoming with a 58-14 mauling of the Yellowjackets.
The Lions remained undefeated at 6-0 thanks to fast-striking plays throughout the game. Dresden’s Quincey McDonald intercepted a Will Northcutt pass on a 3rd-and-15 early in the first quarter. Dresser Winn’s pass to McDonald on the Lions’ first offensive play resulted in a 22-yard touchdown.
McDonald made his third big play of the game when he returned a Greenfield punt for a 60-yard score to make it 12-0 in the first quarter.
The Lions scored again on the first play of the second quarter on a Winn-to-Brice Williams 60-yard TD pass. The Lions defense held the ’Jackets in check once again and on the first play from scrimmage it was Winn to Travis Vermillion for a 41-yard score. The two-point conversion was good to make 28-0 at half.
Dresden had 132 yards of offense in the first half while Greenfield could only gain 13. Winn accounted for 131 yards with his passing. Greenfield’s biggest play of the half came on the first one of the game on a 14-yard run by Jacob Lewis.
Dresden kept up the pressure in the second with Dylan Yates returning the opening kickoff 65 yards for a TD. The two-point conversion made it 36-0.
Dresden began the fourth quarter like it did the third with a touchdown. Cade Rogers was on the receiving end of Wade Moran’s 53-yard pass for a TD. Moran scored a TD on his own with a 13-yard run five plays after the Lions’ Isaac Davidson recovered a fumble.
Greenfield finally got on the board with 63-yard TD run by Dusty Irby with 3:31 to play in the game. The two-point conversion made it 50-8. Lucas Rutkowski scored Dresden’s final TD of the game on a four-yard run. The game ended on a four-yard by Greenfield’s Lewis.
Dresden finished with 257 total yards of offense. Greenfield had 148 yards of offense with 126 coming in the final quarter of the game.
Dresden will be at Gleason Thursday night and Greenfield hosted Steward County on Monday. The Lions will wrap up their season on Oct. 4, at home against Martin. Greenfield will its season on Oct. 2, at West Carroll. Published in The WCP 9.25.12
