WHS band earns awards
WHS band earns awards | Westview High School Marching Band, 11th Annual Skyhawk Marching Band Invitational

Wes Sliger, Courtney Oliver, Drum Major Sydney Gilliam, Leslie Patterson and Brooke Baker.
The Westview High School Marching Band began its contest season Sept. 15 at the 11th Annual Skyhawk Marching Band Invitational held at UTM’s Hardy Graham Stadium.
Westview came in third place in the Class AA.
In the Small Division made up of bands from the A and AA classes, Westview came in fourth overall.
Other awards of the evening were third place in Small Division for both Color Guard and Drum Major Sydney Gilliam.  This is the first time in recent memory that Westview has placed in this competition.
Mike Tucker, the band’s director, said he was very proud of the band’s performance on the field as they marched the first two sets of their show featuring the music by Michael Giacchino.
The two pieces were Enterprising Young Men from Star Trek (2009) and The Glory Days from The Incredibles.
Monday, the band was hard at work learning the field positions for the third set,  Memories and Escape from the television show, Lost.  The next competition will be Sept. 29 in Olive Branch, Miss.
“The band would like to thank everyone who continually supports the students and program by attending their performances and by financially supporting their fundraisers,” a spokesperson said.
Tuesday was the annual Band Supper at the Martin Recreation Park Pavilion.  Over 1,000 ribeye sandwich meals  were served.  A large crowd enjoyed their meal while listening to performances by the Westview Jazz Band, the Martin Sharon Middle School Band and the Westview Marching Band and Color Guard.
This weekend is an off weekend for Westview football, but the band will be appearing in the Sharon Corn and Music Festival Parade on Saturday.
It will be a nice chance for the band members from Sharon to show some hometown pride.
