The University of Tennessee men’s basketball program has received a verbal commitment from Dyer County star Robert Hubbs.
Hubbs, a 6-5 swingman listed as the No. 12 prospect in the country by one recruiting service, attended the Vols’ football game with Florida Saturday as part of his Knoxville recruiting visit and notified UT head coach Cuonzo Martin of his intentions on Sunday, according to the Dyersburg State-Gazette.
“He (Martin) asked me if I was ready to become a member of the Vol family and I said that I was,” a smiling Hubbs told the newspaper on Monday. “It just felt like the perfect fit for me.”
Hubbs reportedly had offers from Duke, UCLA, Gonzaga and Memphis along with nearly every other Southeastern Conference school.
The UT trip was his only “official” recruiting visit.
With great length, uncanny shooting range from the perimeter and the ability to get to the front of the rim, Hubbs has gradually risen up the top prospects list and drew many prospective college colleges to both Choctaw and AAU summer league games.
The future Vol spoke with Martin by telephone late Sunday night, informing the head coach that he will indeed continue to wear orange at the next level.
“It was just a great family atmosphere. The coaching staff all brought their wives and children and I just really felt welcome and I pretty much felt like I was at home,” he added. “This is going to be a great experience for me and my family and we’re really excited about the future and winning games in Knoxville.”
While the family atmosphere in Knoxville was a great selling point, Hubbs said what made the decision an easy one to make was the honesty of Martin, now his future head coach.
“It seems like he was everywhere he told me he would be. Most of my AAU games this summer he was there in the front row watching. When he told me something he did it and that proved to me that he was a man of his word. That made me feel very comfortable,” said Hubbs in Monday’s interview with the State-Gazette.
Tennessee posted a 19-15 record in 2011-12, including a 10-6 SEC mark.
