Dresden jumps to No. 2

Posted: Wednesday, September 19, 2012 12:00 pm

One more win. One more step up.
And now, the Lions can only go up one more spot.
Dresden moved up another slot in the Associated Press Class 2A high schol football poll this week, checking in at No. 2 following a 17-7 win over Bruceton.
The Lions flip-flopped with Grace Christian and now stands behind only Boyd Buchanan in this week’s poll.
Dresden and Boyd-Buchanan are both 5-0 on the season. Boyd-Buchanan received 18 first-place votes, while Dresden, Grace Christian (3-1) and Friendship Christian (4-1), ranked fourth again this week, all received one vote for the top spot.
Little changed in the 2A poll as Houston County is fifth, Oneida is sixth, Adamsville is seventh, Cascade is eighth, Trousdale County is ninth and Hampton is 10th.
Dresden will likely get its toughest test to date this week when it hosts Union City (4-1), the No. 8-ranked team in Class 1A. The Golden Tornadoes, who have been ranked as high as No. 2, actually dropped two spots following their 56-6 win over Greenfield this past Friday.
In addition to UC, which the Lions defeated last year in Union City, Dresden has District 13A rival Huntingdon on its schedule in the second half of the regular season. The Mustangs were upset 30-24 last week by West Carroll and are ranked sixth in the 1A poll.
Across the polls, all the state’s No. 1 teams held their spots.
Maryville is atop the 6A poll, Beech is No. 1 in 5A, Giles County is tops in 4A, CAK is still on top of the 3A poll, South Pittsburg remains No. 1 in 1A and Ensworth leads the Division II poll.
Dresden joins Covington in 4A as the highest-ranked teams from rural West Tennessee.
Jackson Northside is third and Henry County is fourth in 5A, Lexington is eighth in 4A, Milan is fifth, South Gibson sixth and Camden eighth in 3A, and West Carroll (eighth) joins Huntingdon and UC in 1A. Published in The WCP 9.18.12
