SF rallies past Martin for middle school softball tourney title
South Fulton won the championship of the Lake County Middle School Softball Invitational on Saturday, beating Martin in the finals.
The Red Devilettes had twice beaten the host club to advance to the title game, then knocked off a Panther team that had beaten them twice in earlier meetings with a thrilling 4-3 comeback in the last inning.
Elsewhere over the weekend, both Obion Central and Union City ran in a prestigious cross country meet in Nashville and turned in quality performances.
And the Lady Rebel soccer squad won two of three matches in a three-day tourney in Jackson.
The following is a recap of those events.
Devilettes take title
Brittney Proctor’s two-out single in the bottom of the sixth scored Katie Pope with the game-winning run and gave SF the thrilling win and crown in the Tiptonville tourney.
The winning rally began with two outs in the Devilettes’ final at-bat and South Fulton down 3-2.
Emma Glisson singled and stole second, then came home on a Martin error that allowed Pope to reach second base.
The Lady Panthers had taken the lead with two runs in the top of the inning.
SF had hammered Lake County 18-1, then won a 4-3 nail-biter over the Falcons to advance to the championship tilt.
Winning pitcher Katie Clapper, Pope and Kennedy Sisson all had two hits in South Fulton’s blowout triumph, while Adrienne Joyner had two hits, including a big double in the Devilettes’ one-run win over LC.
Macie Lester was the winning pitcher with Alexis Cooke finishing up.
Now 6-3 on the season, SF plays at Lake Road on Tuesday.
Central, UC runners shine
Obion Central and Union City fared well against some of the state’s best cross country runners.
The Lady Rebels were eighth overall, while Golden Tornado senior Daniel Willliamson finished seventh in the silver division of the 36th annual Junior Ward Tennessee Classic Cross Country Meet, held Saturday in Nashville.
OC put three girls in the top 50 and finished with 230 points and a total time of 1:58:58.44
Williamson, meanwhile, ran a time of 17:41.63 to finish seventh out of 189 runners.

Allison Ward (26:18.35), Kelsey Beeler (26:20.03) and Nicole Storey (26:21.17) finished within four spots of each other to round out OC’s contingent.
Chattanooga Baylor scored 49 points to win the team meet, while Ensworth’s Emma Sloan was the best runner with a time of 20:04.55.
Andre Hillsman of Central Magnet won the boys’ meet in a time of 16:56.13, helping his team to the overall title with 89 points.
Obion Central’s team finished 20th overall with 481 points and a total time of 1:45:14.63.

All local runners will compete in the 2nd annual Union City Invitational at Graham Park on Tuesday, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
OC soccer 2-1 in Jackson
Obion Central’s girls’ soccer team went 2-1 in the Liberty Shootout in Jackson over the weekend to place fifth among 14 clubs entered in the event.
On Friday, the Lady Rebels rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat Jackson Northside 4-2.
Ana McWilliams and Katie Speed scored to forge a 2-all halftime deadlock before Whittney Lee and McWilliams tallied after the break to give OC the win.
Lauren Kendall had two saves in goal.
Central split a pair of Saturday matches, losing to tourney runnerup Sacred Heart 8-1, before rebounding to beat Jackson South Side 5-0.
