Herron family suffers losses
Herron family suffers losses | Mary Cornelia Brasfield Herron, State Sen. Roy Herron

This week, State Sen. Roy Herron said goodbye to his mother, Mary upon her death. She was almost 96 years old.

The Herron family has made final preparations for not one, but two matriarchs who passed this week.
State Sen. Roy Herron’s almost-96-year-old mother was admitted to the intensive care unit of an area hospital last week. Herron said for the first time in several days, Mary Cornelia Brasfield Herron opened her eyes wide Monday.
The state senator reminded her that her late husband’s 100th birthday was that day.
“She squeezed my hand and then, within three hours, mother went to join him. She was never one to miss a birthday party,” Herron said.
Less than 24 hours after the death of Herron’s mother, on 9/11, his wife Nancy bid her final farewell to her own mother, Fran Miller of Memphis.
Nancy’s mother, almost 84, was admitted to hospice care last week.
“She is now with her husband. She didn’t want to miss the party either,” Herron said.
While this is a difficult time for the Herron family, the senator offered thoughts of gratitude for the family’s many blessings.
“When our mothers have been with us for a combined 180 years, we can surely be grateful for blessing after blessing, year after year.
“Their lives were full, and they have filled our lives with love,” Herron noted.
The family will gather in Dresden at the First United Methodist Church for visitation Friday between 5 and 8 p.m. and on Saturday at 10 a.m., then hold a Celebration Service Saturday at 11 a.m for Mrs. Mary Herron.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in Dresden or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
For Nancy’s mother, they will gather in Memphis for a Committal Service Sunday and hold a memorial service over Thanksgiving.
