The Messenger, September 12, 2012
A Union City couple was charged with theft Tuesday in connection with an alleged incident involving the sale of used vehicles.
James R. Cole, 74, and Bonita Cole, 67, both of 1108 Edwards St., Union City, were arrested at 11:47 a.m. Tuesday at the Obion County Law Enforcement Complex and each charged with theft, according to a Union City Police Department report.
Police had received a call Aug. 15 from an officer with the Lake St. Louis (Mo.) Police Department, who had a man there who had allegedly been in business with James Cole in Union City and had “fronted” him used cars to sell, with the paperwork and money returned to the Missouri man and Cole paid a commission for the cars he sold.
The Missouri man claimed a recent audit led to the discovery that, over the last 11⁄2 to two years, there have been 13 vehicles unaccounted for that Cole had apparently sold, allegedly obtaining new titles and keeping the money, according to the report.
The police report included a list of 13 vehicles, valued at a total of $40,387.50.
