Martin, Lady ’Jackets double up on victories

Posted: Wednesday, September 12, 2012 12:00 pm

Martin and Greenfield were double winners in middle school softball play, each winning on Thursday and Monday.
The Lady Panthers knocked off a pair of Obion County schools, following up a 17-0 crushing of Union City on Thursday with a tough 3-1 verdict over South Fulton on Monday.
Thde Lady Yellowjackets, meanwhile, topped Bruce-ton 6-2 on Thursday and Dresden 4-3 on Monday.
Middle school softball today has Dresden hosting Bruceton.
On Thursday, Martin will be at Lake Road.
MONDAY’S GAMES
G’field 4, Dresden 3
Greenfield came from behind to beat its cross-county rival Monday afternoon with two runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Starting pitcher Molly Borneman drove in Hope Radford and Sara Williams with one out in the top fifth on a hard hit double to left field.
She set down the Lady Lions in order in the bottom of the fifth to get the win.
Millie Bryant scored for Dresden in the first inning on Radford’s miscue.
The Lady Yellowjackets took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on William’s ground-out that scored Anna Graves, and Radford then scored on Borneman’s RBI single.
Dresden scored two in the fourth on Callen Killebrew’s double that brought Rylee Bell and Olivia Reagan around.
Borneman went 2-for-3 with three RBIs at the plate and gave up three runs on four hits.
She walked none and struck out six.
Charlie Woodard gave up the four runs on six hits, struck out one and walked two.
Martin 3, SF 1
Martin Middle School used a gutsy play in the third inning to down SF 3-1 Monday afternoon.
Heidi Craddock scored all the way from second base on a sacrifice bunt to give the Lady Panthers their first run of the game.
Bunny Jones walked with two outs in the inning, stole second and scored off base hit by winning pitcher Allie Cantrell.
Martin’s last run of the game came in the fourth after Reilly Ford reached on an error by the Devilettes, stole second and came around to score on a base hit by Jada Briggs.
Summer Britt scored South Fulton’s lone run in the fourth on Brittany Proctor’s base hit.
THURSDAY’S GAMES
G’field 6, Bruceton 2
A little bit of sisterly love went a long way in Greenfield’s win over Bruceton last week.
Third baseman Katie Smith scored twice on RBI hits by her younger sister, catcher Kimberly Smith.
Mai Borneman picked up the win by turning in another solid performance. She allowed eight hits, one walk and struck out one.
Pitching conditions were not to Borneman’s liking as a rug was placed over the pitcher’s mound.
The game was played at Bruceton’s baseball field.
The Lady Yellowjackets’ junior varsity team fell to Bruceton 7-3.
Greenfield will be hosting Medina on Thursday.
Martin 17, UC 0
Allie Cantrell picked up her third consecutive shutout last week in the Lady Panthers’ win over Union City.
Tasharea Couch had three hits and scored three runs for the Lady Panthers. Bunny Jones also scored three times on two hits and one walk.
Martin is now 5-3 on the season and will host Black Oak this afternoon and play at Lake Road on Thursday.
Martin’s junior varsity team also got a win over the Lady Tornadoes in a weather-shortened, two-inning 8-0 win. Published in The WCP 9.11.12
