Devil win vs. Fulton cut short
Devil win vs. Fulton cut short | Devil win
vs. Fulton
cut short
It will go down as a victory for South Fulton.
Kelly Spivey didn’t feel much like celebrating afterward, though.
The Red Devils were officially credited with a 20-0 win over Twin-Cities rival Fulton City Friday night when lightning stopped their game midway through the second quarter and FC’s administration refused to resume the game on Saturday, according to the Red Devil head coach.
“We wanted to pick it up on Saturday sometime, but she (Fulton City principal Donna Garland) said she had other things to do and wouldn’t,” Spivey said Friday night.
SF (2-2) had scored three first-quarter touchdowns against the Bulldogs, but had what was considered a lackluster effort in their coach’s evaluation.
“We played about like we have been playing and that means we didn’t tackle well, weren’t physical and didn’t really seem to be in the game,” Spivey said.
“We’d better get interested in getting physical real quick and get our act together, though, because we’ve got a Halls team up next that is very capable and I’m sure has every intention of lining up and whipping us.”
J.P. Fowler’s 32-yard scoring burst before the game was two minutes hold gave the Redmen all the points they would need against Fulton City. Fowler accumulated 91 yards on just five rushes.
A two-yard TD dive by Willie Kneuppel and a 50-yard touchdown rumble by Corey Pinion on his only carry produced points on the Devils’ second and third possessions, and put them firmly in control.
A two-point conversion pass from JaQuay Garmon to Ryan Moore after Kneuppel’s score accounted for SF’s other points.
The Big Red took just 12 offensive snaps in the contest.
Fulton City threatened to get on the board with a 13-play march that moved the ball from its own 25 to the Red Devil 2-yard line on the Bulldogs’ last possession of the night. A 48-yard run by Bryan Johnson highlighted the drive for FC before the South Fulton defense stiffened and held the host team on downs.
“About the only positive I saw — other than us getting a win — was that we got some things on film that we have been working on and we’ll be able to get a look at them now,” Spivey added.
Gatlin Hopkins had a sack, a forced fumble and a recovery in SF’s abbreviated defensive statistics. Moore also had a fumble recovery.
SF journeys to Halls for District 14A action this week.
