UC jayvee volleyball
lights-out vs. Pilots

Union City’s junior varsity volleyball team picked up its first-ever win. The varsity team never got that chance.
UC topped Fulton County 2-0 (21-12, 21-12) in the jayvee contest prior to the scheduled varsity match Thursday night in Hickman.
The storm that moved through the area, beginning around 6:30 p.m., knocked out the lights at the Pilots’ gym, and the varsity match was postponed. Tentative plans are to reschedule the match for Sept. 20.
Meanwhile, UC’s next scheduled varsity match will be Monday at home against Mayfield (2-13).
In the jayvee match Thursday, Dawn Meyers had four aces and eight passes, while Aaliyah Daniels had four digs and Breanna Beard added three digs.
Three other players served an ace.

Tennessee bags up
recycling program

KNOXVILLE (AP) — Drivers heading to Tennessee home football games this season will receive separate recycling and trash bags when they enter the parking lot as part of the university’s attempts to increase recycling.
Volunteers will distribute a blue bag for recycling and a clear bag for trash to every vehicle that enters the lot.
The bags also will be available at other tailgating locations on campus.
Aluminum and steel cans, glass bottles, plastic cups and bottles, newspapers and cardboard should go in the blue bags.
Fans should tie their bags and leave them near their vehicles so crews can pick them up after the opening kickoff.
School officials hope to recycle 15 tons of material each home game. Last season, the school recycled about 10 tons of material per home game.
