in prep golf outings

Westview topped two county neighbors and Trenton in boys’ golf action Tuesday at Persimmon Hills in Sharon.
Houston Haag shot a 39, followed by Barrett Belote with a 41, Jordan Long with a 42 and Emmett Daniel with a 43 as Westview finished with a team total of 165.
Trenton was next with a 170, led by medalist Ethan Temple with a 38.
Greenfield finished with a 189, and Dresden sent three golfers to the match with Peyton Williams shooting a 42.
Tony Robinson topped the Yellowjackets with a 41, Damon Biddle shot a 46, Chris Reddick had a 52 and Mason Hilliard fired a  52.
Tuesday’s outing came on the heels of a solid showing last week at Fulton as Westview was led by co-medalists Long and Haag with a 41.
Daniel shot a 46 and Conner Simpson shot a 48.

Ex-Charger assistant
Titans’ weekly winner

Former Westview assistant coach Kevin Ward was the winner of the weekly Tennessee Titans Coach  of the Week award.
Currently in his second year as head man at Crockett County, Ward saw his team rally in the fourth quarter for a 36-33 win over Haywood last week.
The Cavaliers are 3-0, equalling last season’s win total.
The Titans Foundation will give $1,000 to Crockett County High School, and Ward will be a guest of the Titans at the team’s final regular season game Dec. 30 against Jacksonville.
Keith Hodge of Dresden also earned strong consideration for the award as a result of the Lions’ 35-14 win over McKenzie.

Skyhawks’ Elswick
OVC’s top defender

Kasey Elswick, a senior on the UT Martin volleyball team, was named the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
The announcement marks the 10th time in Elswick’s career that she has won the OVC’s weekly defensive award. That figure trails only Eastern Kentucky’s Brittany Nobilio (11-time honoree from 2006-09) as the most in league history.
Elswick’s play stood out in the First State Skyhawk Invitational over the weekend. In three matches, she tallied 93 digs in only 14 sets (6.64 per set).
On Friday against DePaul, she boasted 40 digs in five sets, which ranks second in UT Martin single-match history behind the 46 digs she produced last season at Eastern Kentucky. She followed that up with a 21-dig effort in four sets against Wright State and a 32-dig performance in five sets against DePaul on Saturday.
Setting an NCAA single-season record with 852 digs last season, Elswick has accounted for 145 digs through six matches thus far in 2012, leading the conference.
The defending two-time OVC Defensive Player of the Year now has 2,108 digs in her stellar career.
UT Martin returns to action this weekend at the Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Ill. The Skyhawks will battle Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday followed by matchups against Nicholls State and SIU on Saturday.
