Remember When —Rebs, UC win openers behind Downing, Dearmitt and Co.
Remember when takes a look back at the local stories from the files of The Messenger that took place 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 years ago.
Sept. 3 — A women’s bowling league was started locally at Bel-Aire Lanes, and Jana Ams rolled the top game in the inaugural session with a 189. Grace Killion finished a close second with a 188, while Doris Cunningham came in with a 187. In the series scratch competition, Lois Watson had the best score with a 504. Faye Chappell was next with a 491 and Ramona West accumulated a 480 total.
Sept. 4 — Aaron Dearmitt threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns to lead Union City to a 35-8 season-opening victory over Stewart County in high school football action. Tracy Bruff caught five passes for 142 yards, while tight-end Jimmy Mosley was on the receiving end of both Dearmitt TDs. Obion Central was also a winner, 16-14 over Westview, when an errant center snap sailed over the Charger punter’s head in the fourth quarter to provide the deciding margin. Richard Downing, returning from a two-year absence from the sport, set up a Tim James short scoring plunge with a 69-yard run and later accounted for the Rebels’ other touchdown.
Aug. 31 — Tommy Victory was named the new head baseball coach at Dyersburg State on a part-time basis. Victory, the assistant principal at Lake Road, had been with the Obion Central baseball program for 15 years (four as an assistant, 11 as the head coach). DSCC was to play its games at night and on the weekend to accommodate Victory’s schedule as an administrator in the Obion County School System. He replaced Jack Overby, who retained his position of head women’s basketball coach.
Sept. 1 — Poplar Meadows Country Club crowned its ladies’ champions after play in three separate flights. Mary Critchlow won the championship division, with Arlene Keeling finishing second. Jo Glasgow claimed honors in the first flight with Evelyn Howard the runner-up. In the second flight, Lee Heile was the top finisher, with Barbara Williams No. 2 behind her.
Aug. 30 — Carlos Lattimore, a fifth-year senior transfer from the University of Illinois who was declared eligible only earlier in the day, scored the game-winning touchdown with just 27 seconds left to lift UT Martin to a 19-18 win over Williams Baptist in the Skyhawks’’ season-opener. UTM had paid the visitors a sum of $15,000 to come to Martin to play, but barely escaped the upset after a mistake-riddled effort.
Sept. 2 — Obion Central’s defense — overshadowed by the expectations of its widely-noted offense — forced five turnovers in a 24-14 season-opening over McKenzie. Joe Key recovered a pair of fumbles, Brian Kissell intercepted two passes and Cory Robertson registered a team-best nine tackles for OC. Union City won, too, beating Treadwell 30-6 as Kenneth Fouse scored four TDs — one on a long pass from Ben Ferguson.
Sept. 3 — Daeron Williams ran for 305 yards and five touchdowns on just 12 carries to lead Fulton City to a 40-0 romp over Twin-Cities rival South Fulton in prep football. It marked the Bulldogs’ first win over SF in seven years as they were forced to forfeit a victory from the year before due to the use of an ineligible player. Williams had scoring sprints of 91 and 73 yards, while the Red Devils were held to just 118 total yards of offense.
Sept. 5 — South Fulton beat both host Trenton and Union City in a three-way golf match. David Shepherd earned medalist honors for the Redmen by carding a 39, while teammate Chase Mayfield shot 43. Landon Nipp totaled 55 for Union City.
Sept. 2 — Zac Jones threw three touchdown passes to help Black Oak beat Lake Road 18-14 in middle school football play. Brandon Swift had a pair of scoring catches and also shined defensively with eight tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. Matt Rasberry shined for BO, too, with a TD reception and 10 tackles. Jacob Garrison and Brett Jackson scored touchdowns for Lake Road.
Sept. 5 — Khiry Lewis tied a school record for most touchdowns in a game with six to propel Union City to its first victory after two losses, 38-20 over Halls. Lewis rushed for five scores and had a pass reception from converted-lineman-turned-quarterback Joseph Shanks that went for another TD. Lewis ended up with 163 yards rushing, five fewer than Tornado fullback Keylon Hyde who led the victors with 168.
