Invitational field poised for competitive weekend

Posted: Friday, August 31, 2012 12:00 pm

Six matches will take place over two days this weekend at the Skyhawk Fieldhouse as the UT Martin volleyball team hosts the First State Skyhawk Invitational for the second straight season on Friday through Saturday.
Four teams make up the field for this year’s tournament, as DePaul, Wright State and Troy will join UT Martin.
The action begins on Friday night when DePaul takes on Wright State at 5 p.m., followed by the Skyhawks’ 2012 home opener against Troy at 7 p.m.
Saturday will be an all-day event, as Troy will battle DePaul at 11 a.m., followed by UT Martin and Wright State at 1 p.m. After a brief intermission, Troy will face Wright State at 5 p.m., while UT Martin will square off against DePaul at 7 p.m. to conclude the tournament.
The Skyhawks took part in the Arkansas Invitational, falling to Arkansas, Kansas and Northwestern State.
DePaul, which competes in the Big East, hosted its own tournament last weekend, defeating Indiana State while falling to Eastern Illinois and Butler.
Troy was a part of a three-day tournament hosted by Georgia last weekend, falling to Georgia State, Georgia and Georgia Southern. The Trojans compete in the Sun Belt Conference.
A member of the Horizon League, Wright State fell to Marshall, Miami and IUPUI in West Virginia last weekend, while also falling to Northern Kentucky at home on Tuesday.
UT Martin head coach Darrin McClure believes that each matchup will be competitive throughout the tournament.
“Every team is hungry to get out there and play,” McClure said. “This tournament also provides our program a chance to compete against teams we haven’t faced before such as DePaul and Wright State.”
McClure also knows that a good tournament simply isn’t possible without the support from the local businesses and fans.
“We’d certainly like to thank First State for being so gracious throughout the entire process,” McClure said. “Without their support, this tournament would not be quite the event it is evolving into.” Published in The WCP 8.30.12
