Union City, Rebels
not moving games
Both Union City and Obion Central will play their home football games Friday night as scheduled.
Hurricane Isaac, which made landfall Tuesday night, has prompted several West Tennessee schools to move their prep games up a night to avoid projected effects of the storm that is forecasted to bring heavy rain to the area Friday and Saturday.
Humboldt at South Fulton, Greenfield at Lake County, Milan at Gibson County, Bruceton at Huntingdon and South Side at Bolivar are among the games to be moved to Thursday night.
School officials at both UC and OC, however, said they would play their games at Friday as was planned.
Union City will celebrate homecoming vs. Halls with the annual parade to celebrate that occasion scheduled for Thursday night.
Obion Central soccer
takes shots at ’Cats
Obion Central outshot Haywood 34-1 on its way to a 7-0 shutout of the Tomcats in prep soccer Tuesday.
Brooke Jennings and Whitney Lee both record hat tricks for the Lady Rebels, who led 2-0 at halftime.
OC broke open the contest with a three-goal barrage in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
Katie Speed was responsible for the other Central goal.
Jennings, Baylie Boucher, Laina Roberson and Diana Ramos all had assists for the victors.
Now 2-0, OC plays at Ripey on Thursday.
OC golfers again
in middle of field
Obion Central’s 193 team total was second to Dyersburg (176) Tuesday at Crockett County Country Club.
The host Cavaliers came in at 197.
Ryan Middlebrook led the Rebels with a 44, one shot better than Klayton Hagen. Korben Hagen shot 48 and both Dallas Edmaiston and Justin Allen registered 56s.
Central returns to action Thursday at Wyn-ridge Greens in Troy.
UC falls to Halls
in volleyball action
Union City dropped its third volleyball match of the season, falling 3-0 (25-10, 25-6, 25-16) to district foe Halls on Tuesday.
Sadie Hollis served up UC’s strongest run of the match as the Lady Tornadoes scored seven straight points off her serves during one set.
She finished with three aces on the night.
Brittany Parker and D’Leshae Olds also recorded one ace apiece, and Parker led the team with 19 pass attempts.
Raven Fair had three kills, and both Alexis Coleman and Molly Maclin each had one. Hollis and Olds had one dig each.
Union City will host Milan on Thursday. The match has been moved to 4:15 p.m. in an effort to be finished before the start of the football homecoming parade.
Michigan visitor
hits ace at Hickman
Randy Simon of Jackson, Mich., recorded a hole-in-one recently at the Hickman Country Club.
Simon aced the 156-yard fourth hole at the course, using an 8-iron.
Witnessing the shot were Wanda Brown and Janis Garrigan.
Failed drug tests
did in Rogers at UT
COOKEVILLE (AP) — Tennessee Tech wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers says failed drug tests caused his recent departure from Tennessee.
Rogers said Tuesday at during a press conference at his new school it was “a couple of drug tests, yes sir.” He says it was him “being a young, immature guy. Those are things that I’ve got to work on and I plan to work on.”
Rogers was suspended indefinitely by Tennessee on Thursday for an unspecified violation of team rules. His transfer to Tennessee Tech was announced four days later. Because Tennessee Tech is a Football Championship Subdivision program, Rogers can play for his new team immediately rather than sitting out a season.
Rogers caught 67 passes for 1,040 yards and nine touchdowns to earn all-Southeastern Conference honors for Tennessee last season.
