Weekend fires investigated

A pair of structure fires that erupted over the weekend are under scrutiny by the Criminal Investigations Division of the Martin Police Department.
According to a press release issued by the MPD, officers with the department were called to the scene of a structure fire at 218 Oakland St. in Martin around 11:19 Friday evening.
The Martin Fire Department also responded to the scene to extinguish the fire. While fighting the blaze at 218 Oakland St., MPD officers noticed fire coming from an upstairs window at the structure next door, located at 220 Oakland St. Both fires were extinguished by the MFD without a total loss of the structures. There was also no “obvious path for the fire to have traveled between the properties,” according to an incident report.
Both of the properties were unoccupied at the time of the fires and deemed suspicious. The incidents remain under investigation by MPD’s CID, the Martin Fire Department and the state fire investigator.
Anyone with information regarding the structure fires is asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-877-364-TIPZ (8479) or 587-2611. If information leads to the arrest and and conviction of the person responsible, tipsters will be eligible to recieve a cash reward up to $1,000.
Tipsters will remain anonymous.
