A new outdoor amphitheater is being planned at the Obion County Public Library, thanks in large part to a state grant.
The Obion County Public Library has received a $56,473 grant from the state to build a 2,824-square-foot amphitheater for outdoor concerts and other library events.
Library director Michele Barnes said today the new amphitheater is still a long way from becoming a reality.
She explained the high cost for the planned amphitheater means the library is still waiting to hear from its application for USDA funding and will also be using three private donations to finance the project.
The amphitheater has been on the drawing board for more than a year, according to Ms. Barnes, who told The Messenger during the interview she hopes to begin work on the new facility sometime next year.
The new amphitheater will replace the existing one in the southeast corner of the library grounds. The current amphitheater will be torn down and replaced by the planned new covered version.
Ms. Barnes said the project is part of a larger plan to enhance the library’s appearance and offerings.
The $56,473 state grant is being administered by the Tennessee State Library and Archives, which is part of the Secretary of State’s office.
The amphitheater will shelter performers from the weather and provide dressing rooms and electrical connections to satisfy audio, lighting and other performance requirements.
“The Obion County Public Library provides free entertainment to the community, which is more important than ever in these difficult economic times,” state Rep. Bill Sanderson said. “This project will create the opportunity to stage more arts and entertainment options that can’t be staged within the existing facilities.”
“The State Library and Archives is proud to partner with Rep. Sanderson on this worthwhile project,” Secretary of State Tre Hargett said. “These funds, along with those provided from other sources, will allow the library to greatly improve the services it offers to the citizens of Obion County.” Published in The Messenger 8.27.12 |
