$32,000 in cocaine confiscated; 2 arrested
Two men from Union City — one from the city here and the other from the city in Georgia — were arrested Wednesday when authorities seized cocaine with an estimated street value of $32,000. (See related photo, Page 10.)
Brian Byers, 41, of Union City, Ga., and Antonio Stephens, 36, of Union City, Tenn., were both charged with possession of a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine) with intent to sell, according to a press release from the local Union City Police Department.
The arrests came Wednesday after Union City police, along with the 27th Judicial District Drug Task Force and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, conducted an investigation into the alleged delivery of narcotics.
During the investigation, a traffic stop was conducted involving a 2006 Infinity SUV driven by Byers and also occupied by Stephens.
Police said a search of Stephens revealed about eight grams of crack cocaine in his pants pocket. He was taken into custody on the drug-related charge.
As a result of his arrest, police searched the vehicle. A box containing about one pound of powder cocaine was found on the rear floorboard between the driver and passenger seats, according to investigators.
The investigation continued, though, and another box containing about one pound of powder cocaine was found to have been delivered to a residence in northeast Union City. This box was also seized and has been connected to both Byers and Stephens, police reported.
The total value of the seizure is estimated at the $32,000 figure.
Interim Union City Police Chief Perry Barfield commended the members of the Union City Police Department’s patrol and criminal investigation divisions, the 27th Judicial District Drug Task Force and the TBI for their “concerted efforts” in the investigation. Published in The Messenger 8.23.12
