Remember When —Past early AP state rankings include Rebels, Union City
Remember when takes a look back at the local stories from the files of The Messenger that took place 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 years ago.
Aug. 23 — The fifth annual E.W. James Tennis Tournament completed its week-long run with winners in a number of age groups. Among the champions in singles competition were Deani Joiner, Elizabeth Tanner, Robert McClusky, Susy Steele, Tracy Snider, Bobby Davies, Karen McWherter, Bill McCall, Tom Schumacher and Joe Smith.
Aug. 27 — Both Union City and Obion Central held preseason football scrimmages in preparation for their respective upcoming seasons. The Tornadoes edged Covington 4-3 as Aaron Dearmitt ran for a pair of touchdowns and both Gary Carr and Marcus Allen added scores. Central was blanked 21-0 by Dyersburg but did get good efforts, according to head coach Jim McPeake from quarterback Troy Patterson, tailback Richard Downing and wire receiver Steve Adcock.
Aug. 26 — Rodney Amos scored 24 points and University of Tennessee-bound Stanley Caldwell tacked on 22 to lead an entry sponsored by First State Bank to the inaugural championship of the Silver Trowel No. 2 Basketball Tournament. Another ex-Union City High School standout, Marshall Brown, averaged 33 ppg in the event and had 38 in a semifinal victory for FSB against Columbus. Kelon Mack won the slam dunk contest and Anthony Davis the 3-point shooting competition in the tourney, which was to use its proceeds for a scholarship for a UCHS graduate.
Aug. 28 — Union City was ranked ninth in Class 2A in the Associated Press preseason football rankings. The Tornadoes were coming off a 10-2 season when they won the program’s first-ever state playoff game and a District 13AA championship. Head coach Randy Barnes was set to begin his 11th campaign at the Twister helm and preparing his troops for their season opener against Graves County.
Aug. 26 — Paducah Tilghman ruined the season debut of Union City with a 26-13 victory over the Tornadoes. Kenyon Ingram returned the opening kickoff 90 yards to paydirt for UC, but the locals didn’t score again until the fourth quarter when Ben Ferguson threw a TD pass to Kenneth Fouse. PT standout running back Joe Casey outgained the Purple and Gold by himself, rushing for 252 yards and three touchdowns on just 15 carries while Union City could manage but 206 total yards.
Aug. 28 — South Fulton produced co-medalists in winning a three-way golf match over Union City and Dresden at Fulton County Club. Kevin Whitten and Ryan Graves both fired 37s to lead the Redmen to a 17-stroke victory. Bradley Bugg and Ryan Guy both shot 41 for the Tornadoes. On the girls’ side, UC’s Samantha Lawley came in with a 51, one shot better than SF’s Kelly Shepherd.
Aug. 27 — South Fulton won on the field for the first time in more than a year when it rallied past Ballard Memorial 26-19 in its first prep football game of the year. Jonathan Avent rushed for 195 yards to help the Red Devils come back from a 13-2 deficit. SF did not win a game the season before, but was awarded a forfeit victory over Fulton City.
Aug. 28 — Lake Road won both a varsity and jayvee softball game over Lake County, 9-1 and 14-1. Laura Beth Shelton had a pair of hits for the Lady Generals in the A-Game, while winning pitcher Macy Allison and Brittney Dodd also had a couple of base knocks. In the jayvee game, Charity Howard and Alex Wilson had three hits each for LR, and Brandi Goodman had two hits and drove in a pair of runs.
Aug. 23 — Obion Central was listed at No. 13 in the first Associated Press prep rankings of the season. The Rebels trounced Union City 36-6 in their opener to earn their fringe rankings in the Class 4A Top 10. The Tornadoes — unexplainably after the lopsided Week 0 defeat — also received votes in the single-A poll.
Aug. 26 — Hillcrest thumped Dyer 10-3 in jayvee softball play. Hailey Johnston doubled and drove in three runs for the Lady Cougars, while Courtney Heuck had two ribbies for the winners. In South Fulton’s 13-2 romp over Union City, Aarial Wright tossed a two-hitter and helped herself with a pair of hits, while Katie Watkins contributed a couple of base knocks. Ivey Westbrooks had a single and drove in a run for the Lady Tornadoes.
