UTM to welcome freshmen Friday
The University of Tennessee at Martin welcomes the class of 2016 Friday as approximately 1,200 freshmen students arrive in Martin and move into residence halls.
The new students will participant in the First-Year Initiative Welcome Weekend, an orientation program that prepares students for the start of classes Monday, Aug. 27.
After Welcome Weekend, students will participate in the semester-long General Studies 101 class that prepares and positions first-year students to achieve academic and social success.
Following Friday’s move-in, First-Year Initiative activities include a 5:15 p.m. opening ceremony Friday in the Elam Center and orientation sessions Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
A combination student organization fair and city of Martin merchants fair will begin at 5 p.m. Monday, also in the Elam Center.
The university’s Division of Student Affairs and the city of Martin will co-sponsor Monday’s event.
Final freshmen and enrollment numbers won’t be official until the 14th day of classes in September.
Total enrollment includes students at the Martin campus and the university’s centers in Jackson, Parsons. Ripley and Selmer.
Fall 2011 enrollment was 7,913 students.
A record 4,221 first-year applications were received for fall 2012 admission to the university.
