Cougars, UC off to strong starts
The Union City Middle School football team and Hillcrest softball squad each opened their 2012 seasons with impressive showings Tuesday.
The Jr. Tornadoes routed Northview 50-24, while H’crest got a 17-strikeout no-hitter from pitcher Macey Cox to beat Lake Road 8-1.
In other football results from Tuesday, Gibson County beat Lake Road 24-6.
South Fulton’s middle school football game against Twin-Cities rival Fulton City scheduled for Thursday night has been canceled due to the Jr. Bulldogs not having enough players to field a team, according to SF coach Jeremy McFarland.
The Red Devils (2-0) now will have 12 days between games, their next outing Aug. 30 against Lake Road at home.
The following is a recap of those games reported to The Messenger.

SOFTBALL
Hillcrest 8, LR 1
Cox was spectacular in the Cougars’ first outing of the season, allowing just three walks while fanning 17, according to head coach Troy Boucher.
She also aided her own cause with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in.
Mollie Johnson had a pair of two-base hits for the victors, Olivia Matherly had two hits and two RBIs, and McClain Bell drove home a pair of tallies.
Lauren Ivy also had a single for Hillcrest.
Lake Road pitcher Jenna Smith was cited for a solid outing by head coach Emily McGee.
Hillcrest’s next game is Monday vs. Gibson County, while LR next plays Aug. 30 at Ridgemont.

FOOTBALL
UC 50, Northview 24
The Golden Tornadoes scored on their first offensive play of the game and then added two TDs in the final 30 seconds of the first half to rout host Northview in Union City’s regular season opener Tuesday night.
Cooper Hurt took off for 72 yards on UC’s initial play for a 6-0 lead, and then Taeshawn Allen doubled the lead with a 48-yard scamper later in the quarter.
After Northview had tied the game in the second period, UC scored twice in the waning seconds as Jeremy Bumpus rambled 62 yards with 30 seconds to play and then Allen tacked on a 28-yard run after the Twisters recovered the ensuing kickoff.
Allen also gave UC its only two-point conversion of the game following Bumpus’ run.
Ahead 26-12 at the half, UC added 18 points in the third period as Bumpus scored on runs of one and 48 yards and Allen added a 38-yard run.
Hurt finished the Tornadoes’ scoring with a 60-yard kickoff return.
Allen led Union City with nine tackles, Hurt had eight stops and an interception, Bumpus had seven tackles, and Kaleb Dowell had six stops.
Dowell and Caleb Worrell each recovered a fumble.
Union City (1-0) travels to Martin on Tuesday, kickoff set for 6:30 p.m.
GC 24, Lake Road 6
The Jr. Pioneers scored all their points in the first half in spoiling LR’s debut.
Mitchell Forrester had the Generals’ lone touchdown with a one-yard plunge in the fourth quarter.
Devin Sheppard and Sinclair Forrest had five tackles apiece for Lake Road, while Joel Johnson was in on three stops.
Forrest was the leading ground gainer for the Generals with 58 yards on seven carries.
LR’s next action is Aug. 30 at South Fulton.
