Stone’s 2nd place tops local golfers
Union City’s Mollie Stone finished runner-up in the individual competition of the Dyersburg Kickoff Classic Golf Tournament Monday at The Farms.
Stone, a two-time state tournament participant for the Lady Tornadoes, shot a 78 in the 18-hole competition to finish just four strokes out of first.
Stone’s play was the highlight for Obion County’s three entries in the event.
The South Fulton girls were third, UC fourth and Obion Central seventh in the nine-team field.
The Red Devils were sixth, Union City 13th and OC 14th among 17 boys’ teams to play in the day-long tourney.
Mackenzie Pane carded an 87, while Sydney Easterwood came in with a 92 for the Devilettes, who trailed only tourney winner Milan and Haywood on the final leaderboard.
Cailee Sinclair followed Stone on the Lady Tornado scorecard with a 125.
For OCCHS, Ashlyn Runions shot 103 and Samantha Wallace a 114.
On the boys’ side, South Fulton eighth-grader Justin Johns fired an 80 to finish in the top dozen players individually and led the Devils’ team total.
David Brundige, a freshman, had a good day, too, with an 82, while Nick Daugherty shot 85 and Easton Wolfe 89 to give SF a 337 total — the best of Obion County’s three entries.
On the Obion Central sheet, Klayton Hagan shot 84, Ryan Middlebrook an 87, Cameron Green 95 and Korben Hagan 98 to give the Rebels a 364 score.
For Union City, Clay Treece came in with a 96, Luke Searcy registered a 103, Cruz Kepner a 107 and Chase Treece a 113 for a cumulative 419.
McNairy County won the boys’ team championship, with USJ placing second.
UC and Obion Central are scheduled to play again today in a three-way match at Ripley. Published in The Messenger 8.21.12
