TSSAA not changing state grid, hoop sites

Posted: Wednesday, August 22, 2012 12:00 pm

The classification system isn’t the only thing staying the same in Tennessee high school athletics.
The Tennessee Second-ary School Athletic Association’s Board of Control voted last week to extend the contracts of the current championship sites for four years.
That means Cookeville and Tennessee Tech will keep the state football championships, while Murfreesboro will retain the host roles for both the state basketball and Spring Fling through the 2016-17 school year.
The contracts for the title venues were scheduled to expire at the end of the current school year.
A 17-member contingent represented Cookeville and Tennessee Tech at Monday’s BOC meeting in Hermitage.
TTU and Cookeville first hosted the state football finals in 2009.
The girls’ state basketball tournament has been played in Murfreesboro since 1975, while the boys’ tournament has been held at Middle Tennessee State University since 1989.
The Spring Fling moved to Murfreesboro in 2006 after being initially held in Chattanooga and then moving to Memphis.
The Board of Control also allowed the TSSAA to explore moving the girls’ soccer championship to Murfreesboro. Those games have been held in Chattanooga since 1997, but scheduling conflicts have resulted in issues with team lodging. Published in The WCP 8.21.12
