Inexperience, injuries gang up on Greenfield

Posted: Wednesday, August 22, 2012 12:00 pm

An inexperienced team with a lot of seventh-graders and two big injuries equaled out to a season-opening loss for Greenfield Middle School at Bruceton Thursday night.
The young Yellowjackets fell to the Tigers 38-0 in a game that had to be hurried up in the second half with a running clock to beat out the severe weather that swept through Weakley County Thursday evening.
Greenfield head coach Hal Blackman lost one of his players earlier in the week during practice.
Seventh-grader and fill-in offensive tackle John Brock may be out 3-to-4 weeks with a dislocated hip.
On the opening kickoff against Bruceton, seventh-grader and starting safety A.J. Street went down with a broken elbow on the kickoff coverage. He also dislocated the same elbow. Blackman said he will be out for season.
“It is a big loss for us whenever we have players go down with an injury,” Blackman said.
“Street is not only our starting safety, he is also our backup running back. It was a scary injury for him. Brock will hopefully be back in less than four weeks. It was a rough week for us. A real bad week.”
Eighth-grade running back, Dusty Irby had 55 yards on 12 carries for Greenfield, while classmate outside linebacker Jacob Lewis had five solo tackles.
Greenfield will open its home schedule on Thursday against Ridgemont. Game time is set for 6:30. Published in The WCP 8.21.12
