Barksdale, offense rule 2nd scrimmage

UT Martin ended the second full week of football summer camp with its second scrimmage of the summer, and senior running back Tevin Barksdale wasted no time showing he was ready for the 2012 season. Barksdale caught a 10-yard screen pass from senior quarterback Derek Carr and turned up field for an 80-yard touchdown to start the scrimmage. Backup quarterback Jarod Neal from Hendersonville also had a noteworthy performance. Neal threw touchdown passes to redshirt sophomore Walter Evans. “Walter is a walk-on and he is trying to get into the mix,” UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson said. As for Neal, Simpson says the backup quarterback is making progress. “What people don’t realize is if Derek goes down, Jarod has to be ready to go. If Jarod gets in there he has to take charge and lead the team, he cannot come in and take a knee. We have to do what we do.” For the most part, it was all offense Saturday night at Hardy M. Graham Stadium. Junior college transfer Jvontez Blackmon and redshirt freshman Marquis Clemmons each had an interception in the controlled scrimmage. Simpson was pleased with the scrimmage, but he stressed the team needs to work on being more consistent. “We need to come back out here and get back to the fundamentals during this last week of camp.” Published in The WCP 8.21.12
