Martin woman beaten; assault charge filed
A Martin man has been charged in the Saturday night assault of a young woman who was seriously injured near the fairgrounds in Union City.
Charles Andrew Langley, 18, of 583 Bethany Church Road, Martin, was arrested Saturday night at the scene of an incident on Grove Creek Circle in Graham Park, according to a Union City Police Department report.
He was charged with aggravated assault and possession and consumption of an alcoholic beverage.
The assault charge levied against Langley stems from an alleged incident involving 18-year-old Rachel Reeves of 129 Victoria Lane, Martin.
Police responded about 9:50 p.m. Saturday to the park in reference to a girl who had been beaten up, police reported. Officers arrived to find Langley and Ms. Reeves arguing and they reported Ms. Reeves had injuries to her face and arms.
Ms. Reeves alleged Langley had beaten her up, according to police, who took Langley into custody.
Officers said they observed two open cans of beer and two bottles of Smirnoff inside Langley’s vehicle and he allegedly told them he had been drinking.
Langley told police he and Ms. Reeves were arguing and he grabbed her by the arm. He said Ms. Reeves told him to take her home and, as he was driving, she jumped out of the vehicle.
Ms. Reeves was taken by ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City and later flown to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo., for treatment of injuries. Police investigators were initially told she sustained a broken pelvis and she apparently was run over by Langley’s vehicle, according to the report.
The incident remains under investigation by police. Published in The Messenger 8.20.12
