Good start only helps Dresden

Two of the four Weakley County middle school teams opened up the 2012 football season Tuesday with one winning big and the other not doing so well.
At McKenzie, Dresden started out strong and never looked back in 50-6 thrashing.
Gleason opened its season strong at South Fulton but faded fast with 38-8 loss.
SF 38, Gleason 8
The young Bulldogs had a tough task at hand against the older and bigger Red Devils on Tuesday, but they surprised the host school two plays into the game.
Ryan Cole took a toss sweep to the left on the second play of the game and tore off down the sideline for a 72-yard touchdown run.
That would be the only the score the Bulldogs could get.
After the Red Devils tied the score at 8-8 midway through the first quarter, Gleason looked primed and ready to take the lead. Heath Keeling scampered 57 yards on a counter play down to the SF 5-yard-line, but the Red Devils held on four plays and kept the Bulldogs from scoring.
South Fulton scored twice in the second quarter to take a commanding 24-8 lead at the half. The host Red Devils scored two more times in the third quarter to put away the Bulldogs.
Gleason put up 195 yards of offense, all on the ground, with Cole rushing for 162 yards. Keeling had 62 yards rushing on five carries.
Quarterback Timothy Russell 0-for-5 in passing and minus two yards rushing.
The game was marred with fumbles from both teams. South Fulton fumbled four times and lost two of them, while Gleason fumbled the ball three times and lost one.
Gleason will open its home schedule Aug. 23 against Bruceton. Game time is set for 6:30.
Dresden 50, McKenzie 6
The Lions opened up the 2012 season in a big way Tuesday night with quarterback Dresser Winn leading the way.
Winn ran for three scores and had two passing touchdowns — one to Brice Williams and the other to Quincey McDonald.
McDonald also had one touchdown on a kickoff return and had one interception.
Winn nearly made it a six-touchdown night but had a 50-yard touchdown run called back because of a penalty.
Winn finished 6-of-8 on passing for 170 yards and one interception. He had 40 total yards of rushing.
The Lions led 14-0 in the first quarter, 36-6 at the half and 42-6 by the end of the third quarter.
Dresden opens its home schedule Aug. 23 against West Carroll. Published in the WCP 8.16.12
