Beauty gives way to beasts tonight in wrestling ring
By DONNA RYDER
Associate Editor
It’s going to get rowdy tonight at the Obion County Fair when wrestlers take over the Reelfoot Bank Stage at 7:30.
The area at the fairgrounds has been dominated by local beauties for the first two nights of the annual event.
Named Tuesday night to the Petite Miss, Little Miss and Junior Miss courts were:
• Petite Miss — Jentry Cate Sydnor, 5, of Troy, daughter of Clay and Meredith Sydnor and a student at Union City Elementary School; first maid Emmaline Grace Qualls, 6, of Kenton, daughter of Jason and Jill Qualls and a student at UCES; second maid Sara Beth Key, 6, of Troy, daughter of Joe and Jessica Key and a student at Lake Road Elementary; and third maid Molly Kizer, 6, of Union City, daughter of Jason and Kristi Kizer and a student at UCES.
• Little Miss — Olivia R. Roby, 9, of Union City, daughter of Allison Treece and Sam Roby and a student at UCES; first maid Riley Beth Perkins, 8, of Obion, daughter of Carrie and Bradley Gooch and Brad and Angela Perkins and a student at Black Oak Elementary; second maid Tatiana Karathanasis, 9, of South Fulton, daughter of Tasha LeCornu and Leo Karathanasis and a student at Ridgemont Elementary; and third maid Riley Jo Campbell, 9, of Troy, daughter of Cory and Sara Jo Sims and the late Shane Campbell and a student at Hillcrest Elementary.
• Junior Miss — Julie Beth Allen, 12, of Kenton, daughter of Lori and Michael Allen and a student at Yorkville School; first maid Katie Seals, 12, of Hornbeak, daughter of Jeremy and Natalie Seals and a student at Black Oak; second maid Mollie LeQing Johnson, 12, of Obion, daughter of Brent and Stacy Johnson and a student at Hillcrest; and third maid Rachel Carol June Ross, 12, of Union City, daughter of Bryan and Christina Wyrick and a student at Lake Road.
Other events tonight include junior and open swine shows in the Hunter Miller Livestock Pavilion at 5; a cornhole tournament at the outdoor arena at 6 and a stick horse rodeo in the barn at 7. Area youth will perform the FairShow musical in the Whitney Cozart Pavilion at 7 and 9 p.m. There will also be music on the Back Porch Stage at 6.
Thursday’s events include Senior Fair Day at Sunswept Baptist Church starting at 9:30 a.m. Lunch will be served to senior citizens after the program, courtesy of First Citizens National Bank. A junior and open beef show will begin in the barn at 6 p.m. and Stormy Montana and Bucky Covington will perform on the stage at 8 and 8:30, respectively. The FairShow musical will be held at 7 and 9.
Obion County Fair president Brenda Baker said fair attendance has been down slightly the first two nights of the fair, with last year’s Tuesday night attendance setting a record.
“You can’t set a record every year,” she said about the attendance numbers.
But, apparently, records can still be set in other areas of the fairgrounds. Mrs. Baker said Monday night’s poultry show auction set two records. The first was the grand champion chicken’s bringing $1,400, while, overall, more than $34,000 was spent by local businesses to support the children of Obion County. Also a record was set in the livestock barn when almost $175,000 was spent during the Obion County Junior Livestock Association auction. (See related story, Page 1.)
Frank Norris of Troy won $500 during the money give-away Tuesday night, while Chris Crockett of Union City won the Pick Tennessee Basket. Only season ticketholders are eligible for the drawing. Tonight’s first drawing will be for $1,500. If the ticket-holder of the first number selected is not there, the prize will drop to $500. A total of $6,000 will be given away this week.
Mrs. Baker also announced that Future Cooks of the Kitchen winners include Bryson Dunn, ages 5-8; Eric Moore, ages 14-18; and Kamron Kirk, ages 9-13.
Tonight will be the last night children of all ages can enjoy riding safety train Little Obie. The train is being provided through the Twin Cities Railroad Museum, which is promoting railroad crossing safety. The train is located outside the front gate.
Season tickets are $25 per person, while general admission is $6 for ages 13 and older and $4 for ages 6-12. Children ages 5 and younger will be admitted free. On Thursday, there will be a special admission and hand stamp for $10. It includes admission to the fair and all carnival rides. Everyone, regardless of age, will pay this fee.
An armband special will be available tonight for $20 from 6until closing, Friday night for $15 from 10 until midnight and on Saturday for $15 from 2-6 p.m.
There will be free admission to the fair Thursday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. for senior citizens, ages 55 and older, and handicapped children. Everyone will be admitted for free after Friday night’s football games from 10 until midnight and children will be admitted free on Saturday from 2-6 p.m.
