Junior Market Livestock Sale raises nearly $175,000 for youngsters
Junior Market Livestock Sale raises nearly $175,000 for youngsters | Junior Market Livestock Sale raises more than $175,000 for youngsters
“It never ceases to amaze me.”
Tim Smith used those words to describe the annual Junior Market Livestock Show and Sale, which were held Tuesday in the Hunter Miller Livestock Pavilion at the Obion County Fair.
Tuesday night’s auction raised $174,864 — a new record — for 102 participants who showed steers, hogs and lambs.
Smith, who has been working with the show and sale for the past 28 years, is office director of the University of Tennessee Extension Service.
“The support from the business community is phenomenal,” he said. “Agriculture is the backbone of this community and an event like this show puts that on display for everyone to see.”
He also lauded the volunteers who make the event a success, including auctioneer Marvin Alexander.
“Marvin donates his time and services every year and does a tremendous job,” he said.
Tuesday’s auction started with the sale of the Grand Champion steer, which was shown by Mary Ali Oliver, daughter of Al and Laura Oliver of Union City. The 1,243.54-pound animal sold to Cole and Short Crop Insurance Agency for $4.50 per pound or $5,595.93.
The Reserve Grand Champion steer was shown by Blake Berner, son of Bobby and Lori Berner of Union City. The 1,346.36-pound animal, which sold for $4 per pound or $5,385.44, was sold to Cole and Short Crop Insurance Agency and Ervin Feed and Grain.
Next on the auction block was the Grand Champion lamb, which was shown by Logan Crabtree, son of Jason and Marla Crabtree of South Fulton. The 135.8-pound animal sold for a record $21 per pound or $2,851.80. The buyers included Commercial Bank, Obion Farmers Co-op, Union City Grain, Inco Ag and Ohio Valley Crop Insurance.
The Reserve Grand Champion lamb was shown by Carter Arnold, son of Troy and Amy Arnold of South Fulton. The 162.96-pound animal sold for $7 per pound or $1,140.72 to Fred Wilkinson-Agri-Equipment, H&R Agri-Power and Monsanto.
Kealy Green, daughter of Melinda Green of Kenton, showed the Grand Champion hog. Her 238.62-pound hog sold for $16 per pound or $3,817.92 to Barker Brothers, Republic Services, Union City Napa Parts and H&O Tool and Die. (See related photo, Page 20.)
The Reserve Grand Champion hog was shown by Carly Whipple, daughter of Kevin and Candy Whipple of Union City. The 267.72-pound animal sold for $10.50 per pound or $2,811.06 to Fred Wilkinson-Agri-Equipment and H&R Agri-Power.
“We are thrilled with the support the Junior Market Livestock Sale receives each year,” Smith said. “Regardless of the economic times, area businesses and individuals continue to come out here to support the efforts of these local kids.”
