with jamboree win

Union City knocked off host Lake County, 16-8, at the junior Falcons’ football jamboree Monday night.
Jeremy Bumpus scored on touchdown runs of three and 60 yards and added a two-point conversion run.
Taeshawn Allen also had a two-point conversion and led the Tornadoes in tackles.
Brett Bivens secured UC’s win with a late interception.
Union City travels to Northview Aug. 21.

Johnny Bruff aces
Hickman No. 17

Longtime Union City resident Johnny Bruff recorded a hole-in-one last week at the Hickman Country Club.
Bruff aced the 139-yard 17th hole, using a six-iron, according witnesses.
Among those to see the shot were Larry Speed, Jimmy Poe, James May, Connie Comstock and Jim Mercer.

Miscues too costly
in Devilettes’ opener

The South Fulton Middle School softball team dropped its season-opener to Dresden Monday 13-7.
Walks and errors haunted the Devilettes, made up mostly of seventh-graders, according to head coach Curt Lee.
Oliva Pope, Katie Clapper and Summer Britt all had hits for SF.
Clapper was the losing pitcher.

UCMS softball
falls to Martin

Union City Middle School began its 2012 softball season Friday with a 6-5 loss to Martin Thursday in a game reported late to The Messenger.
Taylor Crittenden allowed just two earned runs and had four put-outs, but was charged with the pitching loss.
Molly Beth Blackwell, Crittenden, Courtney Worley, Brooklyn Cobb and Kate Terrell all scored runs for UC.

UC’s Williams
runs for Bethel

Ex-Union City High School track standout Deandrez Williams has signed with the Bethel University.
Williams was a participant for the Golden Tornadoes in the Class A-AA state track meet in 2010 and 2012. He was also a member of the 1A UC football state champioship squad in 2009.
