COVERED IN THE PAST
COVERED IN THE PAST
The handmade quilt featuring carefully stitched names, some highlighted with a small blue or gold star, on a red, white and blue background has a story all its own. Discovery Park of America plans to showcase the donated item and would like to know exactly what that story is. Pat Wade of Union City (left) and her husband, the late Tom Wade, found the quilt in storage a few years ago at the home of his parents in Kenton. They believed the late Patty Wade, his mother, had purchased the quilt after it was completed by a group of volunteer seamstresses in the Kenton area. They assume each name was sold for inclusion in its own special block on the quilt, with stars marking the names of veterans. It is assumed the quilt was made sometime during the World War II era, although some of the veterans’ names apparently include service personnel from World War I, as well. Among the names featured are P.H. Keathley, Kip Barner, Sgt. J.L. Shatz, Lucille Carroll, Dr. F.J. Ramer and George Freeman. Anyone with information about the quilt is asked to contact DPA collection manager Jennifer Wilds (right) at 885-6774. Marti Doss (center), a member of the Obion County Museum board, was also on hand to examine the donated item.
