Student chosen for music program

Posted: Wednesday, August 8, 2012 12:00 am

Alexis Arnold of Martin was notified in March that she had been selected to attend the Five Week Summer Performance Program for high school students at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass.
The Five Week Program, now in its 26th year, is the largest, most comprehensive summer music program available anywhere.
This year’s program includes approximately 1,000 students from across the United States and around the world (70 countries).
The program is designed to immerse the student in all aspects of performance and emphasizes the mastery of singing and playing performance skills in the student’s chosen style of contemporary music. Miss Arnold was selected on the basis of an essay stating her goals and objectives and submission of a CD of her performing three songs. She was awarded a scholarship based on her performance CD.
She left Martin July 7. Upon her arrival in Boston, she was required to audition and given an extensive series of placement tests in music theory, sight-singing, musicianship, etc. She is taking five classes a day. In addition to the course work, she is taking private voice lessons and performing in vocal ensembles.
The program will end Friday and she will be returning home Saturday.
Miss Arnold is the daughter of Terri and Eric Hall. She is the granddaughter of Dr. Michael A. and Bonnie Hernon. She is a voice student of Dr. Robert Mancusi.
