’Dogs, Greenfield have ups, downs

Posted: Wednesday, August 8, 2012 12:00 pm

Typical of all preseason football scrimmages, “not all good, not all bad” were the evaluations to come from both the Gleason and Greenfield camps.
The Bulldogs journeyed to Jackson to work with Trinity Christian Academy Friday and were outscored four-touchdowns-to-three, according to head coach Noah Lampkins.
Greenfield, meanwhile, saw its first action under new head coach Don Pitt and came out on the short end of a 4-2 count vs. Gibson County.
Both Weakley County programs will get more preaseason work this week, starting with Gleason, which hosts Lake County today at 5 p.m.
G’field will participate in the Pioneer Football Quarterback Club Jamboree — essentially a three-way scrimmage with host Gibson County, Fulton City and Greenfield — Friday at the Pioneers’ turf in Dyer. Action is slated to begin at 6 p.m., according to the organizers.
In its first preseason outing this past Friday, Gleason had both positives and negatives, Lampkins insisted.
“We were so-so, up-and-down,” the veteran Bulldog skipper said. “Pretty good at times, at others, not at all.”
Lampkins did single out linebacker/fullback Will Clark, who “caught the ball well” out of the backfield during the session, and Blake Taylor, who played a variety of positions. Both scored TDs for Gleason.
In addition to today’s scrimmage against Lake County, the Bulldogs will host Collinwood Friday, Aug. 17, in a jamboree-type setting for their final preseason workout against an opposing team.
Greenfield started off well in its scrimmage against Gibson County, but lost steam as the session went on, according to Pitt.
“I thought we were a little nervous early, which was to be expected with it being our first time out and with a new coach and all, but we really did good early,” the rookie skipper claimed. “I thought we got tired, though, and that conditioning was a factor.
“The good thing about that is that is something we can fix.”
Jeffrey Johnson and Tanner Smith scored the ’Jackets’ touchdowns against GC.
Friday’s jamboree work will be Greenfield’s last action before the team opens its 2012 campaign against Gleason on Aug. 24. Published in The WCP 8.7.12
