Obion Countians Billy Vaughn Sr. and his wife, Geneva, scan over a page of the new book “Service: A Navy SEAL at War,” which includes portions about their grandson, fallen Navy SEAL Aaron Vaughn. Today marks the one-year anniversary of their grandson’s death. Aaron Vaughn, an Obion County native, was one of 30 U.S. servicemen who died Aug. 6, 2011, when a rocket-propelled grenade fired by a Taliban insurgent downed their helicopter in Afghanistan. He was the son of Karen (Rodenberger) and Billy Vaughn Jr. of Stuart, Fla., formerly of Obion County, and was also the grandson of Evelyn Rodenberger of Knoxville and the late Frank Rodenberger, formerly of Woodland Mills. The senior Vaughns have donated a copy of “Service,” written by decorated Navy SEAL and best-selling author Mark Luttrell, to the Obion County Public Library in their grandson’s memory. The book includes a photo of Aaron Vaughn and his widow, Kimberly, as well as a couple pages written by the young widow and other portions that mention Vaughn. Luttrell also wrote “Lone Survivor,” which tells the story of his being the sole survivor of a 2005 mission which claimed the lives of his squadmates. It, too, is available at the local library. |
