Newcomer Scott Northam joins OC school board incumbents
By CHRIS MENEES
Staff Reporter
One newcomer and three incumbents were elected to the Obion County School Board in Thursday’s local balloting.
Scott Northam defeated Dan Huggins in Thursday’s Obion County general election to claim the school board seat in District 7, while incumbents David Lamb and Diane Sanderson both fended off challengers to win re-election.
Northam received 309 votes and Huggins drew 129 votes from ballots cast at the Obion County Public Library precinct, according to unofficial totals from the Obion County Election Commission.
They were vying for the District 7 seat currently held by Susan Williams, who was not able to seek re-election there due to recent redistricting.
At the South Fulton precinct, Lamb garnered 213 votes to defeat challenger James L. Faulkner, who received 158 votes in the District 1 school board race.
Ms. Sanderson received 328 votes at the Kenton and Rives precincts to win re-election to the school board from District 3. Her opponent, Chris Wilson, drew 125 votes.
Brian Rainey was un-opposed in District 5 in his bid for re-election to the Obion County School Board, which he currently serves as chairman. He drew a total of 162 comp-limentary votes from the Cloverdale, Hornbeak and Samburg voting precincts.
The county school board seats from Districts 2, 4 and 6 were not due for re-election this year.
In the Obion County assessor of property race, Judy Smith was unopposed in her bid for re-election to the position. She received 1,888 complimentary votes countywide.
Constables from all seven of Obion County’s districts were also up for election Thursday, although there were three districts where no candidates qualified to run. Among those who received complimentary votes to win re-election were: District 1, Bobby J. Hall, 261 votes; District 2, James W. Hack, 223 votes; District 3, Bruce Davidson, 340 votes; and District 7, Eugene Fletcher, 341 votes. No candidates appeared on the ballot for Districts 4, 5 and 6.
Also listed on the ballot for the Kenton area were three trustees of the Kenton Special School District. All were unopposed, with Charles L. Phillips receiving 99 complimentary votes in the Gibson County trustee race and Mike Farrar drawing 148 complimentary votes in the Kenton city trustee race. No one qualified to run for the Obion County trustee position.
Locally, voters also cast ballots on the question of whether or not to retain or replace a pair of Court of Criminal Appeals judges — Jeffrey S. Bivins in the Middle Division and Roger A. Page in the Western Division. Both were retained by voters in both divisions. In Obion County, Bivins received 1,143 votes to retain and 513 votes to replace, while Page garnered 1,152 votes to retain and 511 votes to replace.
A total of 2,466 ballots were cast Thursday in Obion County from among the 20,659 registered voters. They included 1,179 early and absentee ballots.
Of the total, 1,691 voted as Republicans and 749 voted as Democrats. There were 26 ballots cast as nonpartisan in only the county general election.
