Remember When —UC’s Mickey Hamilton selected for UTM Hall of Fame
Remember when takes a look back at the local stories from the files of The Messenger that took place 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 years ago.
Aug. 3 — Union City’s John Townsley signed a baseball scholarship with Columbia State Community College. Townsley played three seasons for the Golden Tornadoes, but most recently had helped Union City’s 17-18 year old Babe Ruth All Stars to a third-place finish in the state tournament. He hit .419 as a catcher for the local summer league entry. Townsley is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Townsley.
Aug. 3 — The Troy softball team in the Obion County Middle School League was honored with a picnic and swimming party following their season. Receiving accolades at the get-together were Tammy Armstrong (Best Glove); Debbie Keeling (Most Versatile); April Jackson (Best Glove); Kristi Lofton (Most Valuable Player); Shelia Wiley (Best Hustle); and Susan Devasier (Highest Batting Average).
Aug. 3 — Stanley Caldwell, who led Union City High School to two Class 2A state basketball championships and twice was named Mr. Basketball, was named the MVP for his team in the Tennessee-Georgia All Star Game at Chattanooga. The University of Tennessee-bound Caldwell had 13 points, 15 rebounds and six assists despite his team’s 119-106 loss.
Aug. 5 — The Kinkead BWA softball team placed third in the South Atlantic regional tourney, beating reigning state champion Tennessee along the way. Members of the standout squad included Christyna Spicer, Danielle Younger, Tabitha Jenkins, Deanna Blakley, Becky Reddin, Amanda Spicer, Tina Hunt, Janet Kendall, Rachel Little and Sara Little
10 Years Ago
Aug. 5 — South Fulton softball standouts Rachel Sanders and Kodie McClanahan both inked scholarships to continue their respective diamond careers at Dyersburg State Community College. The pair had helped the Devilettes to four consecutive appearances in the Class 1A state tournament, their best showing a fourth-place finish their senior season.
Aug. 5 — Both Union City and Obion Central saw their first football scrimmage action of the preseason and showed they needed work before playing for keeps. The Tornadoes tied Brighton, two touchdowns apiece, while OC failed to score against Westview while giving up five TDs. UC got its touchdowns on a 60-yard pass from Ben Ferguson to Kenyon Ingram and a seven-yard scamper by Kenneth Fouse. The Rebels were missing top receivers Brian Kissell and Colby McGee in their work against Martin due to injury.
Aug. 6 — The Union City Greyhounds won the postseason championship of the wood bat Kitty League with a 3-2 decision over regular season champion Fulton in the rubber matchup of a three-game series at the Railroaders’ Lohaus Field. Zach Hudson made a game-saving catch at the base of the centerfield wall in the ninth inning to preserve the victory. Former Westview standout and speedy UC leadoff man Rafael Hill scored two of the ’Hounds three runs in the clincher after homering twice in Game 1. The title was the first for Union City in the three-year history of the league.
Aug. 7 — A scramble score of 20-under par was good enough for the foursome of Ron Cooper, Lynn Jenkins, Dave Frankum and Herman Jenkins to win the annual Skyhawk Club Kickoff Golf Tournament at Persimmion Hills in Sharon. Another local contingent — made up of Charles Denaburg, Tony Maness, Matt Sanner and Chad Odle — came in at 15-under to place fourth in the event.
Aug. 2 — Union City native Mickey Hamilton was announced as one of four people who were to be inducted into the UT Martin Hall of Fame. Hamilton kicked for the Pacers from 1973-76, leading the team in scoring each of those seasons. He kicked a pair of 53-yard field goals his senior year that still stand as tied for the longest such boot in UTM history.
Aug. 5 — A pair of scrimmages against top-flight competition ended Union City’s first week of practice in full gear. Neither went well as the Tornadoes were handled easily by both 1A Perry County and then Class 5A Brighton. UC’s only score came in the second of those two sessions as Khiry Lewis took a pitch from quarterback Travis Rutland and rambled 40 yards to paydirt. The locals were without standout fullback Keylon Hyde for the second of those two scrimmages after he was taken to the hospital for severe dehydration during the PC session.
