The Obion County Fair hasn’t even started yet and it’s already busy at the fairgrounds.
Saturday, business will pick up even more.
The first entry day will be held Saturday at the fairgrounds in Union City for all non-perishable entries, according to Obion County Fair board president Brenda Baker.
“Planting Seeds for Future Generations” is the theme of this year’s fair — set for Aug. 13-18 — and those future generations will figure prominently into the picture as entries are accepted in a variety of junior competitions, as well as several adult contests.
Junior entries for art, photography, crafts, ceram-ics, sewing and canning will be accepted Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Junior Exhibits Building. The doors will close promptly at 2 p.m. for the junior entries.
In the adult departments, entries will be accepted Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in adult art, photography, crafts/ceram-ics, senior citizens crafts, sewing and canning.
On Aug. 11, entries will be accepted in junior culinary from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Junior Exhibits Building; junior and open crops from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Crop Exhibits Building; antiques and horticulture (garden fruits and vegetables) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Domestic Arts Building; and potted plants from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Domestic Arts Building.
For junior culinary, the required containers, labels and Future Cook of the Kitchen forms are available at the fair office and at the Obion County Extension Service office in Union City.
Adult culinary entries will be accepted Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Domestic Arts Building; and cut flowers and arrangements will be accepted Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Domestic Arts Building.
The livestock entries went “live” on the fair’s website — www.obioncountyfair.net — Wednesday afternoon, according to Mrs. Baker.
This year’s fair books — which specifically outline information about entering and about the many activities offered — are available free of charge at the fair office.
Bar codes which are required for entries are available at the fair office, which is currently open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays as the fair approaches. The office will also be open the afternoon of Aug. 12 — the day before the fair opens — since many people will be working on booths that day, Mrs. Baker said.
Now is also the time for applications to be submitted for the fair’s many beauty revues and for reservations to be made for exhibit booths — including those for civic clubs, public service and commercial displays for businesses.
The exhibit booths are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
“It’s been busy this week. We have several new businesses that want booths,” Mrs. Baker said.
Season passes for the fair are also currently on sale at the fair office for $25 each.
A significant change this year is that only season passes will be eligible for the nightly cash drawings during the fair. Mrs. Baker said the fair has changed to a “ticketless gate” system for entrance and the season passes will be the only pre-printed tickets for admission.
The season tickets will have bar codes and only those scanned each night will be eligible for the drawing. There will be no drawing barrel since there will be no tickets or ticket stubs for regular admission at the gate each night.
“So be sure to have your season pass scanned each night,” Mrs. Baker said.
There will be various special admission and armband offerings for carnival rides during the week — among them a special planned for Aug. 17 following the Union City-Obion County Central football game, which will be played at Union City. After the game, starting at 10 p.m., there will be free admission to the fair and an armband special for $15.
Yet another exciting change this year is a bigger opening ceremony being planned to kick off the fair on Aug. 13 at 5 p.m. The event will be held at the grandstand, rather than the opening gate, and will include a flag dedication and Hall of Fame announcement.
The many activities scheduled for this year’s fair include beauty revues, the junior livestock auction, motocross racing, the youth fair show, championship wrestling, concerts by Stormy Montana and Bucky Covington, a truck and tractor pull and demolition derby action. The Messenger will provide details about all events closer to time.
