Carlie Vowell, 15, of Martin received the Harry Denman Evangelism Award June 5 during the 2012 Memphis Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church in Jackson.
Vowell is a sophomore at Westview High School where she achieves top marks, plays on the tennis team and serves as president of the community-oriented Interact Club.
She also attends Martin First United Methodist Church and is an active member of the youth, as well as the Hands for Him Sign Language Choir.
In 2012, the Westview High School student also received the crown for Miss Teen Earth United States.
Dr. David Russell of Dyersburg, Memphis Conference Evangelism Chair, presented the Denman award to Vowell, as well as to Lisa Clements of Jackson, and to the widow of Rev. Eulas Greer of Camden.
The three earned awards for youth, laity and clergy respectively.
This is the first year the conference has given a youth award.
Established in 1981 and sponsored by the Foundation for Evangelism headquartered in Lake Junaluska, N.C., the Denman Award honors those within each conference of the United Methodist Church who have made outstanding efforts in Christian evangelism.
The Memphis Conference includes more than 82,000 members in more than 425 United Methodist Churches in West Tennessee and Western Kentucky, as well as many cooperative United Methodist ministries throughout the area.
Its 2012 Annual Conference took place June 3-6 at the Carl Perkins Civic Center in Jackson.
